iOS 4.2 Reduces Power Output to iPad Camera Connection Kit
iPad owners who recently upgraded to iOS 4.2 are in for a shock if they use the iPad Camera Connection Kit with certain cameras. With the iOS 4.2 update, Apple has lowered the power output of the iPad’s 30-pin connector to a mere 20mA, down from 100mA in iOS 3.2. This means that some cameras and other peripherals that use the 30-pin connector, will not function if they try to draw too much power from the iPad. If you do attempt to use a power-hungry device you will get the following message: “The connected USB device requires too much power.”
The new power specification is most likely a new feature designed to improve battery life on the iPad. This is little comfort to iPad owners, however, as some users rely on their devices on a daily basis. Hopefully, this is just a bug that will be addressed in the next iOS update, rumored to be coming later this month. Currently, even Apple’s own USB keyboard does not function under iOS 4.2. Other affected devices include USB flash drives and USB powered microphones. Self-powered devices, however, remain unaffected.
The ability to upload pictures on the go, is one of the iPad’s nicer features. For now, photographers who want to upload pictures directly to their iPad, should wait and see if their equipment is compatible with the latest iOS update. Unfortunately, downgrading to pervious iOS versions is something Apple frowns upon, so some users may end up being stuck until this problem is resolved.

I was thinking of buying the camera connecter 2 days ago, well good thing I didn't!
12-05-2010, 09:42 PM #5Can we alter this?
Is there any way to alter this via ifile or possibly a new cydia tweak in time. Kinda like over clocking your processor.
I want to upgrade to 4.2.1 for a lot of reasons like having access my iPod library in that new djay app. But stuff like this and being tether for the time being are keeping me comfy on 3.2.2 right now ~_~

I said about this about 2 weeks ago.
I have about 5 posts here already saying this.
I unfortunately just updated again yesterday forgetting about this problem.
I hope someone fixes this and releases it in Cydia as crApple wont. They love to crIpple things.

I once prayed to God for an iPhone, but quickly found out He didn't work that way...so I stole an iPhone and prayed for His forgiveness.

Everytime they (crApple) update their firmware they remove some good features.
Why don't they just fix all the bugs instead of adding crap features?
Why add printing support for 2 printers when there are thousands of printers out there?
I'm quite sure crApple are retarded.

I think it's quite obvious why they (crAppke) did that.

Some of the things that require more power do work if you plug a powered USB hub into the connection piece. No - it's not a solution to the problem, but it may be a good alternative until a patch/fix is released for it.

Yeah there's a discussion on this, but the bigger thing is that you could access a USB drive from the connection kit and watch movies, look at pictures, etc.
But since they cut the power it doesn't provide enough to access anything on a drive.

If it were just power consumption , that be one thing but like the above post it was prolly to stop people from watching video content not acquired from iTunes ... I toots believe. The movie rental feature there has been led ballon of sorts..lord knows I'd never rent one....
If it is just "power consumption" just make a setting for USB output... Eco = 10ma. Normal = 100ma
One everyones happy..
I must won an iPad .. I'd never buy one abut feor free it's pretty cool. I was looking at the USB adpater. Glad Im waiting. I would have been bummed if I got it and it didn't work..
Also, Line 6 makes a midi adapter for iPad .. I wonder if that is effected by this as well"Jane, get me off this crazy thing !!!!"

I went back to 3.2.2 because of this. Not because of camera but because I use a headphone amp/dac. The dac shows just how cheap the one built into the iPad is. Music sounds amazing coming through the amp/dac especially lossless music. . It plugs into the camera connection kit and then your headphones plug into it Works fine on 3.2.2. Hope they fix this. Bought the camera connection kit for this reason only. If not Apple hopefully Cydia will have fix.
