Default Has Interest in HP Slate Flatlined?

Somebody has been exaggerating. And it appears to be the folks at HP.

Following the January 27th introduction of the iPad this year, rumblings were soon detected about the forthcoming HP Slate and the mega expectations that both HP and its fan base supposedly had for the rival tablet. But as reports surfaced Monday morning from leaked internal data, the information collected indicates that HP planned to build an initial run of just 5,000 tablets.

By comparison, better than 45,000 iPads were sold each and every day during the previous quarter. HP's plan to only roll 5,000 Slates off the assembly line doesn't suggest that there was nearly as much internal confidence in the product as publicly advertised. Fortunately for HP, however, consumer demand was greater than "expected" and 9,000 orders were received (but still nothing to write home about).

So if you didn't know about the alleged initial tiny batch of HP Slates, you might be deceived into thinking that the current message posted on HP's website (that the HP Slate 500 is on back-order and won't ship for another six weeks) suggests powerful consumer demand for a bountiful new product. In reality, if all morsels of information are accurate, HP finds itself in a situation where consumer demand for the HP Slate 500 is only slightly less dismal than the expectations maintained by HP itself.

The HP Slate 500 retails for $800, but individuals who now find themselves on the six week short list waiting for HP to build 4000 more Slate are reportedly being offered a $100 discount on their purchase.

wow thats very sad i cant believe all the hype i heard about the Slate and they only built 5000 of them for the initial run hope this isnt representative of what all the other companies are doing because this is laughable they might as well not even compete

    Haha HP confidence FAIL.

    Default not surprised
Well, if their slate's are anything like their other computer products they will break down after 1 year and you won't be able to fix them, or find parts or drivers to fix them.
..and 'support' for them will be as entirely useless as all HP "support".
    (non-existent)

Honestly, I have no idea why people buy HP computers at all. they are total garbage.

You guys think Apple fan boys are bad? Read the people defending the Slate in the reviews section. Wow. The forgot to mention that when you actually do use the "full OS" and "full web with Flash" the 5 Hours of battery life gets cut in half! If you have to charge up your portable device every 2-3 hours it's not very portable.

I am going to get my hands on one sooner or later. 2-3 hours on a device that lets me do what I want to do is better than 10 hours on a device that dictates what I can and cannot do.

    Default slate is a POS
I had the opportunity to mess around with it for an hour and let me tell you the experience is terrible. The HP rep. told me it will be running windows 7 and don't plan on seeing a webOS slate any time soon. The thing clunky and awkward too.

hey HP, want some EPIC with that FAIL!!!

This article proves Apple fanboys can spin anything into a story about how Apple is great and all other companies are failing. Pathetic.

I would say an initial order of only 9K units is a massive fail compared to over 300K Apple sold on the FIRST day alone.

You don't like the iPad because you don't have one!

Don't get me wrong guys. I'm all about a full OS tablet.. but the technology just isn't quite there yet for a good user experience. W7 is not optimized for touch, the second you boost the processor you squander the battery life... and consequently have a horriblly laggy touch screen experience. Either battery technology is going to have to progress or the tablet is going to have to be twice as thick to get decent life with decent dual core processor.

    From the reviews section
""can iPad join windows domain control? - no need
    Network shares? - yes actually
Can we use USB-to-Ethernet adapter on iPad? - no need..
iPad has no sd, hdmi, and USB slot. - True
iPad can not run Microsoft office. - No need, many Office apps available
With more than 250000 apps on ITunes, there is no app has ability to analyze wifi signal strength. - yes there are... and why do you need it?
HELLO!!!! There is no way you can edit an PDF file on iPad. - you sure?
    Full web experience with ipad?
What a joke! No flash, no java. - mine has java
You can't even use simple "scroll bar" function on safari browser. - flick up or down

iPad is a cripped toy. Period!

Hp slate does all that and it is what I need on the road.

(typing on iPad) - yeah right. Crippled user if they are.
    Really?

Didn't they buy Palm? What were they thinking? Love Apple or not, a successful company isn't going to make the decision they did to put a portable OS on a tablet without some testing and serious thinking through.

And again the "Full OS" obsessed around need to remember that most people don't use machines the way they do. Most PC owners only surf and email on their home PCs, there's no reason they'd need anything more on the go.

I think many of us have enjoyed the ipad to realize we need a more robust ipad full OS, built in miniSD, and camera whatever hp slate offers IMHO
