iPad 2G in Q1 2011: Display Manufacturers
According to DigiTimes, the perennial source of rumors out of the East Asian electronics manufacturing industry, LCD component suppliers in Taiwan are saying that they're gearing up to produce touchscreens for the second generation iPad. The new displays, which the manufacturers say will be available "in the first quarter of 2011," are the same size as the current screens, casting some doubts on recent rumors (which were originally peddled by - guess who? - DigiTimes!) about a smaller 7-inch iPad.
DigiTimes writer Susie Pan quotes sources at TPK Touch Solutions, Chimei Innolux (CMI) and Wintek as saying that they are "completing validation with Apple" on what are said to be "ultra-thin glass-based touch panels" for the second-generation iPad. The manufacturers have increased capacity, according to the report, to deal with expected demand for the new device. Additionally, the CMI and Wintek plants are referred to as "4.5G," an intermediate step to 5G or fifth-generation LCD manufacturing that's capable of creating LCD sheets 1 meter square. Bigger sheets mean more panels per sheet, so they can turn out more panels at a lower cost.
The news comes amid an increasing number of reports of Apple rushing a second-generation iPad out in time for the holidays. In general, Apple has limited refreshes of its mobile product lines to once a year. Most industry observers expect a front-facing camera and FaceTime support to be in the new model, while the rumors about a smaller "mini iPad" (ugh) have persisted. The current report neither confirms nor denies the smaller form-factor device, so it's possible that there could be two variants.

considering how there was absolutely no logical reason whatsoever for a smaller iPad to be produced, this makes sense. Here's hoping it's as soon as possible -- I know Apple and I know that their 2nd gen devices tend to be the ones that really show-up and eclipse their predecessors. I've made the decision to hold off the iPad for that very reason.

Possibly the best-kept Apple secret, since nobody knew about this for 9 years! :P

The iPad is selling like hotcakes and some of you think they're going to throw away the annual refresh cycles they've consistently maintained for the last nine years for... what exactly? This holiday season is nothing special. Apple's been more consistent with their release schedules than any other tech company in the industry. Occasionally something goes wrong (e.g. white iPhone 4), but by and large that isn't the case. If the iPod Touch and iPhone have shown anything, it's that the screen sizes do NOT fluctuate, regardless of resolution bumps. Apple isn't at all worried about Android tablets, and no one is worried about RIM, webOS, or WinPhone7 tablets. There is no reason to modify their schedule, hence they won't.They can have my jailbreak when they pry it from my cold dead fingers.

damn i can go days without charging the thing...my iphones charged daily...i know its because of the size difference and being able to fit a bigger battery
but i am definitely happy with the battery life

New iPad: retina display, faster processor, Facetime (with high-res camera), bluetooth HFP and AVRCP (hopefully!! ) profiles, and 1GB of RAM and I'm f---ing sold. And if they added in a few USB slots and a super-accurate capactive-touch pen, I'd orgasm.
EDIT: And a back-facing high-res camera with flash would be pretty snazzy too.
