Default New Kindle Ready For August But Not To Compete with iPad

Amazon is preparing an updated Kindle that will roll out in August. But unlike earlier speculation that suggested Amazon would aim to compete with the iPad by releasing an upgraded product that delivers a more dynamic platform, it now appears that the Kindle isn't yet ready to compete as aggressively with the iPad as previously thought.

Later this summer, Amazon will introduce a new and improved Kindle that will deliver a sharper picture and a thinner body. That's according to a new report from Bloomberg this weekend, citing anonymous sources at the company. The next-generation unit won't serve up color or boast a touch screen, but it will be "more responsive," say those familiar with the forthcoming release. Last week, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos informed an audience of shareholders that color and touch screens are envisioned for the "long term" and "in the laboratory, but they are not quite ready for production."

Chief Executive Officer Jeff Bezos said this week that the company was concentrating on wooing committed book readers.
When the New York Times reported in February that Amazon wanted the Kindle to be an iPad killer, they pointed to Amazon's recent purchase of Touchco, a developer of flexible multitouch panels. With heightened expectations now dramatically lowered, it appears we may be a few more generations away from the Kindle being a versatile-enough product to compete with the iPad - assuming, of course, that Amazon even wants to compete with Apple in this market. From introduction to present day, the Kindle has remained remarkably successful even following the iPad's thunderous arrival.

My Kindle became immensely "more responsive" when I sold it and bought my iPad on day one.

There wont be a competitor with the iPad because there is nothing the iPad does that you can't do on your iPhone. Plus the iPhone is so much more convenient

the iPhone is great... but for doing many things, the larger screen of the iPad is ideal. Ever notice they don't print newspapers the size of a postage stamp? There is a reason for that!

Or... maybe they want to keep it as JUST an eBook reader, as that is what it was meant to be...

Your iphone is the size of a postage stamp? How did you get it to be that small?

I once prayed to God for an iPhone, but quickly found out He didn't work that way...so I stole an iPhone and prayed for His forgiveness.

sarcasm, my friend. I obviously wasn't speaking literally the size of a postage stamp.

I have the iPhone, in fact I have had every iPhone. And I had the Kindle DX. To me, the iPad does everything the Kindle DX did, and far more. Selling the one and using the proceeds to purchase the other was a no-brainer for me.

I agree - they even have a Kindle app for the iPad that lets you read all the same things, just in color and with a touch screen.

I also fail to see how Kindle is useless.
iPad is expensive while Kindle is cheap.
People who do not want to give up their control of their device or what they can do on it to a person *cough*Jobes*cough* may want Kindle.

the kindle looks so old. old like the starTAC. and not the one with the reversed colored screen. the one with the green and black LCD. yeah i had it. it was superior.THEN. its like releasing a product [NOW] that types letters on paper with ink from mechanical moving arms and calling it the iTYpewriter. they need to advance.

As long as kindle stays doing what they do best then there will be a strong market for them.

The Kindle.... Hahaha. The success of this product truly baffles me! It looks like a relic from 2001, and seems equaly ancient technically. I could see this device being cool 10 years ago... But now?? With allthe other amazing devices out there, I don't get it.

Also, if I really want a book, I would rather buy the book. I would much rather have a cool collection of books, then a collection of files on my little kindle device....A nice collection of books in your room adds character! And how r u supposed to go to
the coffee shop and pretend to look intelligent pretending to read something like War and Peace! If a girl sees u reading that she will be impressed! If she sees u using a kindle, she will just think u r a dork, or too cheap to buy a ipad!! Ha

I like to read on Kindle, to me it is less strain on the eye. I do not own one because I prefer my book in print, but if I ever need to get a ebook reader Kindle is the one I get.

I guess I am not allowed to be sarcastic then?

That is the entire point of the kindle. Some people don't understand that. They all should read a couple dozen novels on the iPad and see how well their eyes do. For what it's worth I own neither, but the kindle was meant to be an eBook reader and only an eBook reader. I don't see why so many ridiculous comparisons. When people were comparing the iPad to a true notebook, people were screaming "no fair". How, then, is it fair to compare an iPad to a kindle?

The same was said about music cds/vinyl/etc. Times have changed and people obviously are willing to invest into fully digital media.

As far as the coffee shop comment, who the hell picks up girls at a coffee shop by showing off the cover of the book they are reading? For what it's worth the kindle and the ipad are quite similarly priced, so I don't think the first thing that comes to mind when seeing a kindle owner is "too cheap to buy an ipad".

You have clearly missed the entire point of the tech used in the kindle, although it seems most posters on this thread have as well...

I find it funny that members take offense when the iPad is compared to a netbook and now people are comparing the iPad to Kindle. They are completely different mediums. As far as reading goes, Kindle is the proper device.
