Sony Likely to Challenge iPad With New Tablet
Recently, MMI extended coverage to the industry rumor that consumer electronics juggernaut Sony was thinking about jumping head first into the tablet pool to challenge Apple and possibly claim a chunk of the iPad's market share. Illustrating that every now and then a rumor in the tech world can still manifest into reality, the Wall Street Journal today is reporting that Sony is giving the green light to a tablet product of its own.
Sony is developing a portable device that shares characteristics of netbook computers, e-book readers and hand-held game machines, according to people familiar with the matter.
While's Apple's arrogance is sometimes too overpowering for its own good, a Sony tablet could humble Cupertino a bit and foster greater competition in the tablet marketplace - a situation that ultimately bodes well for consumers, though not necessarily for Apple. Sony, which already has a positive relationship with other industry giants like Google, may soon find itself delivering an Android-based alternative to the iPad that could really shake things up in the tablet computer business.

If Sony delivers a good product Apple will get some competition which will keep them on their feet.

I hope they launch fast & competively price it. The Sony eBook Reader came too late & pricey.

May I just say that it's inevitable?
Sony make some of the sexiest electronics out there. Combine that with Google's Android. I drool at the possibilities. Oh god... gimme Sony Android Tablet now! With Snapdragon and Tegra 2 and HDMI and 16-hour battery :P I'm willing to pay iPad price for that. The Aigo/Compal tablets look amazing too (assuming they'll actually come out soon...) at $350.
I agree with NVidia. Apple set the bar too low with the iPad specs.

I love Sony, but Apple's iPad is probably going to end up winning.

I dont know y but i would preety much dislike a tablet that runs windows 7 but a tablet would be awesome if it runs OSX i prob go first for google android , ipad , sony/hpslate

In order to Sony make a Hit with its tablet, it would have to joinventure with Android. If they make a stand alone XBR menu like the PS3, I would'nt see much market penetration...

By the time anyone actually gets around to finalizing their product it will be time for the second generation iPad so for anyone thinking about waiting for any of these mythical devices.. I wouldn't hold your breath.

How is this news? Everyone and their mother is trying to produce a tablet to compete with the iPad. Sony? WTF? Oh yeah, they've done real well against Apple for the past 7 years. These are the guys who invented the walkman, but when it came to mp3 players they fell flat and haven't been able to get back up. I won't be holding my breath for this tablet.
