iPad Hype Prompts Strict Privacy, Security Measures

If you've read anything this week about the impending iPad arrival, you might think that the security and privacy measures Apple is taking ahead of Saturday's tablet launch are somewhat... dramatic. With reports of everything from Apple employee gag orders to (unconfirmed reports of) beefed-up security measures at Apple's retail outlets, it almost appears that Cupertino is bracing for riot-like conditions on Saturday.
While the media is beautifully playing into Apple's insatiable appetite for high-drama, the iPad launch closely mirrors similar Apple product rollouts in past years. Several news outlets, in fact, are making a big deal out of the fact that they can't find an Apple Store employee who has already had an opportunity to test out the iPad. As usual, Apple employees are universally kept in the dark - including team members who may have to promptly troubleshoot a device they have never before touched. But this is standard operating procedure for this company, an organization that loves secrecy every bit as much as it loves technology.
While Apple hasn't publicly commented on the bulking up of security measures at retail outlets across the US, there have been concerns that some individuals might try to illegally obtain the iPad hours before it officially goes on sale. Of course, given the way these rumored security measures have been covered, you would think that Apple is anticipating angry mobs to break through the doors and windows of their stores Friday night because they simply can't wait until Saturday morning to touch the Holy Grail.
Then again, if you're among the aforementioned "mob," don't bother going to great lengths Friday to intercept any large shipments inbound to an Apple store. Once again, Apple is believed to be sending out "dummy freight" as decoys - a move the company similarly made ahead of the iPhone's initial sales debut three years ago.
Yes, it will be a glorious occasion when Saturday finally arrives. But it may be even more glorious when Saturday is finally over.

I dont understand the hype for the iPad among the hardcore Apple community...its nothing special or even new....its a big iPod Touch. I would most definitely not want to read books or magazines etc on a 10" back-lit display.
I cant believe so many of you are excited for it.

The geniuses at the Apple store have been instructed to Replace any iPad that a customer brings in complaining of ANY issue, for the time being. Other than that they have been given no further information on it.

There isn't anything special about the Ipad.. Apple's only selling point- The A4 Processor... thats it... I even called to see what the RAM or memory is on this thing.. No one knows.. its not even listed on their site.. I called the store they said call 800-AplCare...
Nothing special except for all the applefan ppl who love spending money on anything steve jobs puts on there.... and the funniest part is that they will have to shell out MORE money to get updates... How funny is that?? check out the article on the home page from yesterday... I cried when i saw that.. All that money and now they have to dish out more money and its not even full updates..HAHAHAHAHAHAAAA!!!

Ok, really, Apple would it really be that bad if people got a hold of one these a few hours or even days before they are officially launched? Seriously, it wouldn't hurt your bottom line at all and could help promote the device.
I also think that there are very few people that would want this type of device (there are some that this would be handy for though). I think that if Apple had made it essentially a macbook with a touchscreen and onscreen keyboard it would have been much better.

Seriously, comments like this can just GTFO.
They're probably just flat-out replacing all iPads that have any problems right now because they might have rushed the product and haven't had the time to do more "top-notch" quality control checks, don't you think? We know they're rushing because they already missed the deadline they set for themselves earlier.
This is a website about Apple product-related news and you're seriously trying to troll? The selling point for the iPad is its large screen for reading books (I'm going to try to work it so that I never have to buy an over-priced college textbook again.. go eBooks!), and browsing the internet over 3G. Oh, right, the iPod Touch doesn't have 3G capability. Really though, gtfo.
EDIT: How many people that browse ModMyi and keep up on Apple product news and developments actually pay for updates anyways? Wink.
Well, think about it from a business perspective. Say that some person - ANY PERSON, even a regular Apple employee - got a hold of one a few days ahead of time. That person then found they completely disliked the iPad or were pre-disposed to dislike it, and reported to all their friends and over the internet through blogs and YouTube and whatnot that the device sucks, that it is disappointing, and that no one in their right mind should buy the device over, say, the much cheaper Kindle. Apple would immediately lose the potential to gain more money through future purchases and pre-orders as people flocked to the cheaper competition, or to just going without altogether.
..not that I approve of all the secrecy or general practices of Apple, of course.
