I've got the new iPad that came preinstalled with iOS 5.1 (model : MD328LL). This iPad has never been jailbroken before.
I am looking to jailbreak the iPad on the new OS and wanted some advise before I attempted to do so.
I have previously jailbroken my 3GS on iOS 4 so I have an idea as to what needs to be done and am not exactly new to this, however some advise can't hurt.
Since my iPad is currently on 5.1, do I have to update it to 5.1.1 before running Absinthe? If yes, do I have to restore from factory settings with the upgrade, or can I just do 'update' in iTunes so I don't lose my data etc that way?
If I do have to restore from factory settings to upgrade to 5.1.1, can I restore from backup after the update to the new OS, before running Absinthe to jailbreak the iPad?
What I'm getting at is, if I don't need to lose my data, settings etc then I'd honestly rather not. But if I must do a factory restore before upgrading + jailbreaking then I guess I have to do it no choice.
Anything else I should be wary of before jailbreaking?
I have a Mac that I will use to jailbreak the iPad btw.
Thanks for the help.

You'll have to restore to update to 5.1.1. You must backup in iTunes first before doing a restore as that will wipe everything. You can then sync all the data back.
After restore just use Absinthe 2.0.2 to jailbreak the iPad and that's it.

Does this work on the iPad 2

Yes it will. You can now use absinthe 2.0.4 which is the newest

You don't have to restore and update you could just update. You only have to restore and update if it's jailbroken, not if you going to jailbreak it.

Tried jail breaking my friends ipad2 for him with absinthe but it won't complete the jailbreak. I'm not new to jail breaking looked at the guide for iPads to see if it would be different than my iPhone 4 but it's not. What could be the reason why it's not working any ideas? It's on 5.1.1 btw

Have ya tried redsnow and see if that works? IMO redsnow is better.

Yes. I've tried both. They both will say like jailbreak in progress or whatever and then say can't be completed.
