How to make a device like iPad or tablet?

Okay so I decided that I want to make the next day-to-day device. I have an idea for a device that is mainly for college students and a going green type of device. I am familiar with many different programming languages like java, basic, pascal, and unix. Going to learn C and C++ soon. My question is, how could I go about starting to make my own device? And what is the best language to write my software in? How could I test my software? How to make or get the actual hardware for my device? Anything helps. Thank you"
