no service&unable to load network list

hi.

i have jailbroken&unlocked iphone 3g 3.0 but when i put the sim card in it says no service and in the carrier setting it says unable to load network list. driving me mad. i have searched all over the net and have had no luck. anyone out there any idea what might be wrong. i would be very grateful ..
