help please! installer ****** my iphone!

I have the 1st iPhone, running 2.1, jailbroken & unlocked.

I installed an update in "installer" today (4.0b9).

I pressed the home button.

The screen went black and I got the spinning circle thingy.

Then the metallic apple logo appeared.

---

I waited several minutes and the logo just stayed there.

I held the home and top buttons for 2 seconds and it shut off.

Then i pressed the top button and the the metallic apple logo appeared.

---

Repeat the above three lines times like 5 tries.

I decided to let the logo sit for like a while. Every few minutes, the screen actually flashed for a second and the logo just re-appeared. I can't get to my home screen or anything.

Can someone offer some advice what to do?

You have the spinning wheel of death unfortunately. The good news is you can still connect to iTunes and sync all your contacts if you haven't already and then you'll have to restore. I'm still running beta8 so I don't know if this update is a widespreadk problem or not. Sucks dude.

I got home and I wanted to restore, I turned on the phone and got the apple logo forever. I plugged it into iTunes and it appeared on the left sidebar of iTunes and then I looked down and I saw my home screen! I didn't even need to restore

Installer F'ed my iphone too!

Well the installer update did the same thing to me!..
But I found this post on everythingicafe and it fixes the problem.

You have to use something like disk aid or 91pcsuite to get access to the files on the iphone then do this: (unless ssh is turned on your iphone)

LionOfTheSouthUK
What about this? I found this before the 2.1 upgrade, when downloading something from Cydia would end up with me having to restore.

1. turn iphone off
2. connect cable
3. turn on ipod iphone
4. listen for ding dong (window) or what ever the mac sound is
5. ssh to your ipod iphone
6. goto /var/mobile/
7. rename Applications to Applications2
8. wait 5 second and your springboard will pop up
9. now rename Applications back and restart

DO NOT FREAK IF YOU SEE SOME APPS ARE MISSING
If this happens a manual sync in iTunes WILL BRING BACK YOUR APPS,IN NORMAL STATE, because the apps are still downloaded on your device, Just not Visible.

I thought that with the Installer update that they may have fixed it, but it seems like every other time I use it I brick my phone. Happened again this morning after I downloaded the Installer update, the Extended Preferences, and Backgammon. Never an issue with Cydia apps. iTunes did get it going again, but now my Status Bar is hosed. Battery says 0 and no Carrier or signal strength display (update: works intermittently).

After just getting hosed again, I'd like to figure out how to get rid of Installer and any related applications. Should I just remove all installed packages (including Installer) from within Installer? I do have iPhone Browser. Any tips?

any ideas for the wheel of death coming up after restoring? it says that it's been restored, then it comes up to the logo screen and starts spinning in such a way that the lines on the wheel don't fade away while it spins. they just keep adding to the circle that's already there... and it just sits there... spinning... laughing at me.

yes, i am restoring my backup. yes, i know i could try restoring and setting it up as a new phone. but no, i don't want to do that and have to reconfigure the entire phone again. i've been forced to do that enough times already...

EDIT: i forgot to mention that i've tried a DFU restore and it gives me the 1600 error.

EDIT #2: whew... it seems that restore #3 may have done the trick...

You do not have to restore. You just have to ssh into var/mobile and rename your Applications folder to Applications2...your phone will then reload the springboard. All you have to do after that is rename the Applications folder back to the name Applications.

i already restored, so it's too late for that. however, SSH wasn't turned on when it crashed anyway, so i wouldn't have been able to connect.

lost everything.

it said that it was restoring my backup... it sure didn't. it's a fresh phone... so now i'm going through, reconfiguring the entire thing. again.

yep. i'm pretty ticked... and am never using installer again.

EDIT: i just noticed it didn't sync my contacts... and whenever i try to, it just hangs (the bar moves but nothing happens after waiting 15 minutes). any ideas for me? this is getting ridiculous...

EDIT #2: calendars won't sync either...

EDIT #3: after restarting both devices, i got them to sync... thank goodness.
