Unlocked iPhone Without Installer

Hi.
I recently bought an unlocked 1.0.2 iphone. However, this phone does not have installer on it and any of the methods of installing it seem to involve complicated code, which is beyond my computing ability.
Is there a way of finding out the unlock used ? Also, if I want to add apps in the simplest way possible, or to upgrade to 1.1.1 or 1.1.2, is the best idea for me to Restore my iphone to 1.0.2 and proceed with a full unlock myself ?

if your unsure of the programs or how it was unlocked and there for dont know how to use it, id restore and start from scratch, im not all that cleaver with hacking stuff but thanks to this site and there guides i pulled of my first jailbreak sucsesfully, and now my ipod is jam packed full of apps.

it dont hurt too play around with it after all if you do mess it up you can always restore back to standard.
