Depends. I upgraded but it was just bc my phone was being screwy. I think I would've stayed on 5.0.1 based on pure laziness if it wasn't. Honestly I can't see a huge difference for how I use my phone. It's up to you if you want to upgrade or not.
You can preserve your baseband if you use a custom firmware.

They says it works better when ya do a clean restore. It's not required but does help speed up the process and better chance of not having any problems in the future

+1. It's always safer to do a fresh restore when an initial jb process has failed, before doing the jb again. Sometimes it works out, sometimes it causes more problems. Better safe than sorry is what I say.

Also, all the tweaks you have will be overwritten by the jailbreak. I've done it on accident before and I had like 10 MB of disk space left, literally. It's always good to do a fresh restore.

You can use the latest redsnow. It's already working for 5.1.1

I'm having trouble with my device. It is on 5.1.1 (9B208) but will not complete the jailbreak. I have searched high and low for Absinthe 2.0.2 as that seems to be the only way that I have found to successfully jailbreak the phone with that version. Any help?

Try using a different computer or USB port. Also ake sure that iTunes is closed while you run the jailbreak.
