I just inherited my brother's old 3GS. It's never ever ever been updated, let alone jailbroken. The damn thing is still on iOS 3.1.3!
I did some snooping around and found out this 3GS is a new bootrom one, then I plugged it into iTunes and it offered me to upgrade to 4.3.5, but I didn't.

I'd like to know what my options are here, as far as jailbreaking goes. Would it be advisable to update (via iTunes, or redsn0w, or whatever) to a newer firmware and then jailbreak? Or should I just jailbreak it as it is? Or should I just leave it alone?

I'm not very concerned about sim unlocking since my brother uses the same carrier I do, but it would be nice to know what options i have in regards to this as well?

    Thanks

Unlocking will depend on what carrier it is locked to.

If you try to restore iTunes will take you up to 6.1.3 which is only a tethered jailbreak for new bootrom 3GS.
First step is to use tiny umbrella and see what shsh you have. Under advanced click box that says save shsh from cydia.

Are you sure it is new bootrom too? What method did you use to find that out?

I put it in DFU mode and followed redmondpie's tutorial

You mean after i update it to 4.3.5, iTunes will try to push that other update?.

No, if iTunes tries to update you to 4.3.5 you will get an error. It won't be able to actually install 4.3.5, it is probably saying that in error because you have an older version of iTunes.

I did forget to mention another option, Apple still signs 4.1 firmware for 3GS so going to that firmware and jailbreaking is always an option for you too.

I just checked and I have the latest version of iTunes (11.0.5.5) so that's kinda weird. And then I went into tinyumbrella and, sure enough, all the blobs I can get are for 4.1 and 6.1.3. So I guess that's that.

I don't think I'd mind getting 6.1.3, but I just don't know how fast it's gonna be on such an old device. Granted I won't use it for much since I don't have a data plan, but if even the most basic phone functions lag then you can see why I'd be wary of it

4.1 is definitely the faster of those two firmwares on a 3GS. It's not terrible on 6.1.3 though.

Is there any jailbreak yet for iphone 4s 6.1.3, or is it a lost cause now that iOS 7 is coming out and there just focusing on that?

Will there be a way to go back to 6.1.2 anytime soon or anything, recently used my 2 year upgrade on another iPhone purposely to jailbreak and its just doesn't seem to be coming around...

    any help is appreciated

A little followup on this, just for the sake of completion. The moment I clicked the update button, it prompted me to do a recheck and then it offered me 6.1.3, Simon was right all along.

I'm about to take the plunge i think. wish me luck.

What if I'm on 6.1 on a 4s any luck? I saw a video that said use Evasi0n for all devices on 6.1. I'm currently jailbroken if that matters.
    Thanks

I'm Sorry I wasn't clear... I'm on 6.1 Jailbroken now... and due to the bad 3G reception wanted to move up to 6.1.X to hopefully get better reception... I'm on ATT with unlimited data, but with only 1 bar in my new home. I hate to move to another carrier and lose unlimited data. So its really important I get more bars. Not sure that Sprint works here either

Are you certain that moving up in firmware will give you better reception? I would check with someone else that uses the same carrier and see what their reception is like before I moved up. Just my opinion.

Depends if you want to keep your jailbreak or not.
