Can I power an iphone 2g with any battery?

I need to retrieve some data from a dead iphone 2g; I suppose the battery is the problem but I don't want to buy another one because I just need to perform a data backup
Since I have a lot of lithium 3.7v battery, can I just solder one of these to the iphone?

Interesting thought. I don't know if you can do that, but the iPhone doesn't turn on when connected to a charger? Even if the battery is gone it should turn on when connected to power.

I'm pretty sure the external power is not enough to get the iphone to work; I already fixed some dead iphone, whose only problem was the battery

I'm performing a backup now

I only soldered the black and red wires to the outer and big contacts of the 3GS battery
It also shows the charging sign while connected to the pc
