    Default Searching/No Service
Hey guys, I'm trying to fix an ATT phone right now and can't figure out the searching/no service problem. I replaced the antenna because it was broken but now have this problem. The sim card however is not activated... is that what's causing the Searching/No service because I thought even with an unactivated sim card the phone was still supposed to display 3g....?

You activated the phone though right? If the AT&T SIM is inactive, you might not get it to display any service or bars with it. At least that's in my experiences. I've used my old AT&T SIM cards to activate iPhones but it always says "No Service" with no bars for the phones. And of course it does not display any 3G or data icons as well.

I guess it's activated? I'm not sure idk how exactly AT&T works as I've always had And worked mostly with Verizon up until now... But the phone quit workin cause the antenna broke so the guy activated his old AT&T phone leaving the iPhone sim and perhaps phone as well unactivated... When I put the card back in the phone it says searching then no service which I was again assuming was because the sim is not activated. But I just wanted to make sure nothing with 3G was supposed to show up when an inactive sim is inserted

When you pop it out and back in does it go to searching for a few seconds?
If so then it should be working just fine it will not show 3G or anything with out an active sim

okay, so the customer took it to have it activated today and it didn't work... even after replacing the antenna and getting the "searching" and "no serivce" in the top left. I guess they tried switching sims and that didn't work either... any ideas?

Is the little copper piece on top of the board touching the bezel?

    Cowboy,

You asked the original poster if the copper strap was touching the bezel. Is that necessary for the antenna circuit to work?

    Thanks!

So I ran into a similar issue the other day on an AT&T phone after replacing the bottom speaker part.. When I powered the phone on it showed date of December 31, 1969 and would just sit at Searching.. Odd.. Tried everything I could think of, finally Reset Network settings and it fixed it. Worth a shot..

Have they restored their phone yet? I'd make them try that. Sometimes iOS can be fussy with new hardware. I'd also try what joshmoulton said. Never a horrible idea to do that unless you're jailbroken and not on AT&T.

SIM card is likely the issue and it must be active.

Seems to me they are putting their original sim in it. Unlikely it was damaged or inactive.
