If the battery in my 3GS is completely toast/dead, should the iPhone still turn on if I plug it into power via the USB charging dock?

Haha. Sounds like an issue I'm working on for a customer right now. I'm going with the charging port next and then the battery.

Typically if the battery is completely toast, once you plug a charger in you will see the Apple logo. The second you take the charger out, it shuts off. In other cases, if the battery technically "works" but doesn't ever charge, you will get the lightning symbol. Forever and ever. Just be patient! Hahaha. ;]
