Thread: iPhone 4 randomly shuts off, has to be plugged in.

Default iPhone 4 randomly shuts off, has to be plugged in.
So up until yesterday, I had a perfectly functional iPhone 4. I happened to drop it, and it decided to shut off. The curious part was that I had to plug it into a charger to get it to reboot despite the fact that it had 90% charge remaining. Now, it commits suicide in the same manner whenever it's not in use. I've concluded that it must be a hardware issue although there is no visible, external damage because I have since restored the phone to 5.1.1 through iTunes. If it's as simple as a battery replacement, I'll be ecstatic, but as of now I'm unsure what I should do since it's no longer under warrenty.

May be something inside that got knocked lose. Ya have any experience in taking one apart? You tube has alot of good tutorials on how to do so.

When you say shut off does it actually turn completely off like nothing works like switching it to vibrate or like the screen just goes blank

sounds like a battery issue. does the phone function perfectly as long as it is plugged into a charger?

It's probably worth noting I replaced the shattered back glass about a week ago.>_>

Yeah, completely off. The apple logo shows for about 3 minutes when plugged in too before reaching the lock screen.

But once plugged in it works just fine in all areas. In fact, as long as I don't let the phone go to sleep, it's fine unplugged.

It may just be the battery connection i would double check and make sure it is pushed down all the way

Definitely make sure the battery's connection is good. You may want to try reseating the connection as well.

Also, is it jailbroken? Just seems weird that it will function fine if the screen doesn't shut off.

Okay, I just removed and reinstalled the battery, and the only thing that may have been amiss before (that I could see anyway) was that the one phillips screw on the battery tab was a bit loose. I just hope I haven't overtightened it now. One very curious thing I noted, however, was that when I turned my phone off to perform the procedure, it read 95% battery, but when I turned it back on afterwards, it read 100%. Anything you can make of this? I mean it seems like a good sign to me because one thing I forgot to mention originally was that the percentage readings would go up and down a few percentage points occasionally.

Is this a 4 or a 4S? If it's a 4, what are the odds that you missed or improperly reinstalled the pressure clip on the battery connector? Did you clean the connector with alcohol? This screams of loose connection.

  13. #13
It's a 4, and no, I didn't clean anything, but so far so good.

    I was having this problem

I had a replacement iphone4 and when I removed back plate, it was missing the screws to hold the battery connection. Fixed it with screw.

  15. #15
I'm having the exact same problem. Did opening it up and verifying the connections fix your problem?

  16. #16
Yes it did. I'd you decide you decide to remove the battery completely to reseat it. Pry from the right side if tab feels like it will rip off.

Perfect. Thank you! You're the only thread I could find that described the same problem I had

Same here, it started a few days ago after the 500th drop in 2 yrs. and it is driving me nuts. Thought it might be as simple as checking battery had not moved. Will go ahead and do that.
