The SIM Tray can be removed from the outside of the iPhone. Take a small thin pin or small thin needle and bend the very tip into a small hook or L shape, with tweezers or small pliers, anything to bend just the tip less than a mm. Put the needle into the small SIM Tray hole a mm or two, and wriggle it to catch, and then just pull the SIM Tray straight out.

It takes a bit of pressure. Mine kinda "sticks" aswell but if you have to resort to a hook then do it.

Good choice with going to cowboy, great guy. To say the least, if you were swapping out the middle plate then you most likely forgot to include the rocker module that attaches to the physical frame of the iPhone 4. The only other thing i can imagine is that you did not set in the motherboard correcty and then forced the simtray inside causing it to jam.
Either way, no need to second guess now. Let cowboy do his magic and im sure you will have your iPhone back in no time.Apple Technician - Modder
