How Do You Fold / Route the Headphone-Jack-Volume Flex Cable for iPhone 4?
I have now attempted the Headphone Jack & Volume Control Flex Cable Installation twice and failed twice.
First time - the volume button down button was faulty and didn't click - I installed anyway successfully, but of course, didn't have volume down. After several months, the headphone jack was acting up - headphone controls never worked, and jack had to be pushed in just right.
Second time - headphone jack doesn't work at all. I disassembled again, and realized the flex had torn next to the headphone.
How do you this properly!? I don't understand, nor can I find info or pictures anywhere, how to properly route the flex cable.

What i would recommend is look at the folds on the one your replacing but don't crease it to hard till you have almost completely installed. The flex cables on the 4 and 4S are extremely trick and difficult. I hate doing them yet i do at least one a day

Het guys, thanks for the advice.
Here in lies my problem: the original flex was damaged from the beginning (started w a used, damaged iPhone and fixed it), so I have never seen what an original, folded, installed flex looks like. I don't have a problem attaching volume and vibrate buttons - my only problem is how to lay the cable between jack and buttons... Because I have never seen an original! I am confident that I can do it in under an hour if I just knew how to lay the cable!
Cowboy - if you do one a day, could you do me (and maybe this forum) a huge favor and take a couple close-up snap shots of how the flex looks installed before you put the board and other components back in?
I ordered two new flexes this time around and plan on doing the switch (again) in about a week.

When replacing the headphone jack/silent switch/volume control, follow how the original part was folded. Fold it identically with very gentle pushes, just enough to bend them into place. I've done a few. One of the easier fixes if you ask me.

So... I followed the video exactly. And my volume up and vibrate buttons seem to be combined - volume up causes phone to vibrate and to volume up, vibrate causes phone to vibrate and volume up. Also headphone remote doesn't work. I disassembled and reassembled twice more. Same results. I don't get it. Could the flex just be bad?
See post #4.
Helpful. Thanks.

The part you purchased is bad then most likely unless you routed the assembly wrong. The volume keys should not activate vibrate function at all, the only way the vibrate function is activated if the switch is put down or up. I advice all technicians to purchase from reliable sources that provide OEM parts, saving a few bucks will not save you the headache after.
