Default Stuck Power On/Off Lock Button. Replaced. Still not working....

    Hello,

I have a iphone4 on At&t. Ran out of warranty on June 2011.

About 1-2 weeks ago, i realized i had to press extremely hard on my lock button. One day, it wouldnt even work.

I made an appointment with Apple and the Genius looked at it. He said its a mechanical defect and we have to give you a new phone. When he put in my serial number, obviously he saw i was out of warranty.

Told me i had to pay $150 +tax to get a new phone.

What i dont understand is even i didnt do anything to it and the Genius said it is a mechanical defect, why should I pay for YOUR problem?

Anyway, he told me i could replace the button on my own by going to ifixit.

I bought the button and had my brother replace it. My phone works, but the button still isnt working. Its still stuck. It doesnt "click."

I am so sick of my iphone right now i am NOT paying $150 for THEIR problem.

What should i do? The Genius told me to get this part....

Ok, let us look at the problem. the button that you already had in the phone may or may not have had a small disc inside of the indentation. the FLEX CABLE assembly is the problem here, probly not the button itself. All you have to do is take out the button, and see of the orange part on top is:
    1. smashed in
    2. lacking the small black "nipple" on top. (7/10 of a mm) (for us U.S. measurement types, that would be converted to, well, perty dang small!)
If there is no small button on top, the springiness will not be there. you can try with different thicknesses of plastic stuff, or watch the video by mvn in thread "iphone 4 power button not working" page 2.
after watching the video, thank the guy huh? almost 20,000 views, and nobody said thanx? come on guys.

I've just had the same problem. I bought the button but nothing happened so I then changed the Power & Sensor cable and everything worked out perfectly.

Lol, thanks. If anybody needs spare films with the "nipple" on top, feel free to shoot me a PM we have a couple of defective pieces in stock. From what your describing, your problem lies in point #2.
