Do you need a microchip in a wifi only iPad2?

I am planning on buying an iPad2 in the near future, but I'm not sure if I would need a microchip in it if it is only WiFi. I had the problem of having to wait about a week for the microchip to come in when I bought my iPhone and would like to know if this is nececary for the iPad with only WiFi so I can keep that in mind once I order one...
