I have a black screened iPhone 4 that is stuck in DFU mode brought in by a customer of mine...it gets recognized by the computer in DFU mode...when I try to restore to any firmware (even latest 4.3.5), itunes stays on "preparing to restore iphone" for about ten minutes till it gives me the 1601 error. Is this hardware issue?
Any suggestions on how to fix this will help greatly. I suspect I may need to reflow on some area of the motherboard.

Error 1601 can be due to faulty iTunes or old iTunes. If old, update iTunes or if current, completely uninstall and then re-install current iTunes. I would Restore the iPhone on another known good working computer, with current iTunes, and known good working USB cable.

another problem CAN be the USB port. on my laptop, two of the three ports will NOT work for syncing.
did you use the tiny umbrella to kick it out of recovery??
