iPhone 2G Headphone Jack Issue

I bought a used iPhone 2G 8GB. When headphones are plugged in, the device senses that no headphones are plugged in. When headphones aren't plugged in, the device thinks that they are plugged in.

I just now replaced the headphone flex cable inside the iphone and i'm still having the same problem.

I have also restored the iPhone since I had bought it so I don't think it is a software problem.

Does anyone have any suggestions? I'm so lost now; I have no clue what else to do.

What are the chances of buying a broken flex cable that had the same problem... :/

Have you tried cleaning out the inside of it?
