I phone always on mute

Iphone 3g 3.13 jailbroken and unlocked for T mobile.
Every time I make a call my mute button is pressed. As soon as the call connects the phone is muted. If i press the mute button the screen goes black, but the phone stays muted. I thought that matbe it was a software issue so I reset evrything and started from scratch. Reinstalled 3.13, re-jailbroke and unlocked it and still stuck on mute. I had my screen/ digitizer replaced and this started shortly after (a day later) so I am thinking it is a hardware issue. Any ideas as to what it may be would be welcome.

use sb or pt and go to 4.2.1 but install nothing. just test it. if it still happens it's hardware

no use sn0wbreeze or pwnagetool to preserve the bb so it will not update. then inatall ultrasn0w(ok just install ultrasn0w, that's it!). and see if it still happens
