When is it time to replace the digitizer?

I have a 3G and experiencing some unresponsiveness. Sometimes it is a lag but other times nothing. I guess I will do a restore with it first but any advice would help.

Is your front screen digitizer the original from Apple that came with the iPhone, or has it been replaced? What firmware are you on? Some degree of lag appears to be normal (sucks) with 3g iPhone on system 4.

A simple test would be to restore to 3.1.3, if the screen response in not perfect, then maybe a replacement could help. If you are downgrading from firmware 4 you will need Tiny Umbrella to kick out of Recovery at end of Restore. Good luck. Brad

Yeah, I have a 3G and it is the original, jailbroken, unlocked and on 3.1.2. So at this point, I just restore, and if it is the same then its the lag and not the digitizer?

digitizer efficacy does not deteriorate over time.
At least not observed through my experience.

good chance it is just a slow phone.
Replacing the digitizer is a bit overkill.
Should just ditch the phone and pick up a 4...
