Default Iphone 3GS Screen Replacement Successful....Now Speaker doesn't work....
This is the 2nd time I've had to replace my wife's screen/digitizer and all was well until I tested the speaker. No dice. It has already been suggested that it may be the #3 wire that I may have inadvertently damaged however, after installing my screen from my 3gs (which is the original factor screen) on my wife's phone the speakers still did not work...HELP! Thanks in advance!

Sounds like a cable may have been damaged then, could be #3. If you take it to Apple, they may notice that it has been taken apart, which voids the warranty.
You may want to PM Westerman, as he does repairs also.

Yea take it to Apple but they are calling people out for replacement screens. So hopefully your screen does not have that grid that shows.

The phone in question is no longer in warrenty. It can't be a #3 cable because I have tried the screen from my iPhone on the phone in question. Will AT&T fix it or replace it even though it's out of warrenty? Can I just replace the speaker myself? Thanks.

do you have some sort of a link for repairing and buying the speaker? Is that what you are thinking is the issue now? I was thinking that was the issue all along, the only thing is that I don't see what I could have done to damage the speaker! I forgot to turn the phone off when I was testing my original screen on her phone. Could I have shorted it out? Thanks for the help!

Just to be clear. When we are talking about the 3 ribbon are we talking about the small one that is connected to the screen/digitizer that plugs into the small slot with the lock handle? Because, I'm confused how there could be an issue with the ribbon if I had plugged in my factor screen (still working fine with my phone) to my wife's phone. Wouldn't that factory screen have worked fine? I'm thinking it might be the plug port for the #3 maybe? Thanks.

I'm guessing it is your #3 CONNECTOR. Have you tried YOUR screen in your wife's phone and confirmed your ribbon is working? I can replace your #3 connector if needed, but make sure you rule out everything else. It is rare to damage the actual speaker, but I've seen it done.

I did in fact try using my screen in her phone. This is why I'm thinking it is a speaker issue and not a #3 connector issue. Would you concur?

Okay it looks as though you are not understanding the phone's hardware, or we are not understanding you fully.

#3 ribbon = link between the #3 connector and the ear speaker, proximity sensor and ambient light sensor.

#3 connector = controls the ear speaker, proximity sensor and ambient light sensor.

ear speaker = separate entity within the screen midframe, lightly touches on two spots of the #3 ribbon.

If your screen works 100% on your phone and does not on her phone, then it is your #3 connector

If her screen (includes ear speaker) does not work on her phone but does on yours, see line above.

If her screen (includes ear speaker) does not work on both phones, it could be a combination of #3 connector and #3 ribbon, you will have to rule out the connector by testing with your screen.

If her screen (includes ear speaker) does not work on her phone, but works on yours, it is the #3 connector.

Hope that clears things up. Also, the ribbon is pretty fragile, be careful or else you will have 2 phones needing new ribbons or connectors.

It would seem that I may not have properly explained the situation. The new screen in her phone works fine...both for her phone and for mine. The issue is with the 1 speaker at the bottom of the phone. If I try to use itunes to play a song there is no sound. The ear speaker used to make calls works perfectly. I understand the #3 ribbon is for the ear speaker. Is it also for the main speaker at the bottom? Thanks.
