Thread: Phone turns off? Battery??

Hi, I've got a 3gs with 4.2.1. The case on the phone is slightly damaged and there is a slight gap at the top of the phone. The phone works fine however when i squeeze the phone near the top it shuts itself off and when i let go it reboots. I think this might be some sort of battery connector problem? has anyone heard of something similar or know what the problem might be?
I'm guessing it must be some sort of loose connection somewhere and am just guessing it must be the power as the phone turns off as if lost power?

is it open by the power button on top? maybe when you press it, it pushes the power button underneath and that is why it goes off?

Thanks for the quick replys.
Yes it is open at the top. the only reason I don't think it's the power button is because when it switches off the screen turns white and then fades as if the power has suddenly been taken away and doesn't go through the usual shutting down procedure.
Could it be the power button even though it doesn't shut down the same as if you press the button?

not sure of the history of the phone, but if it has been open, I would make sure to re-open it and check that all the screws that hold the motherboard are there, and all the parts are in the right place. could be that something pushes the motherboard up and it lifts from the bottom, where the battery makes contact...

Ok, phone had a little rattle before taking apart. Once apart i found a random loose screw inside. Took it apart down to battery level, couldn't for love nor money find where this screw came from!!
Reseated all contacts and all screws!
So far so good phone hasn't done any weird turning off! Am hoping that the screw was shorting something?
Will see how it goes and report back!

did you check the screw is not from the vibrate motor? that tends to rattle when is missing a screw... quick troubleshoot, if you put it on vibrate it will sound weird (since the thing is lose) it is supposed to have 2 screws holding it if I'm not mistaken

Just checked the vibrate and it does sound a bit weird so it probably is that. Have turned the vibrate off for the time being just in case.
Will open it up again tomorrow and have a good look!
