issue with charging after replacing battery
okay guys so i was real dumb when replacing my battery. when trying to open the case i was pulling apart the phone between the chrome and backing rather than the chrome and screen. I got it open the right way and replaced the battery but now I cant charge it, and i cant with the first battery back in.
Im thinking in my prying the wrong way I broke the dock connector some how because If i plug it into my pc i get an error overloading message and when i plug it into my car i get a USB error message. Think a new dock connector will fix the problem? i did begin my wrong prying from the dock part of the phone.

try that, if that doesn't work, there are some metal pins that connect from the motherboard to the chrome part to conduct power from one place to another, so that might be too since the chrome is bent out of shape (I guess)

i assumed that was a contact point and I was trying to bend that piece back to touch the metal around the edge of the case.
does anyone have a good picture of the exact shape that piece should be in?

Do you have the hole between chrome piece and plastic piece on the left side ( if you look from the front)

Like you were saying in original post that you were trying to separate the chrome piece from back plastic. Did the chrome piece actually came off? Also as I understand we are talking about 3g/3gs?

oh no i never got it apart or the chrome piece off. I got the chrome separated from the back housing about .5 cm before i gave up and realized i was dumb. i feel like i did here a "crack" when opening it up but cant remember for sure.

Let me throw this at you. It might not be your assembly at all in question. Might be the battery.
Let me share my story.
I have a 3GS. The battery started dying too quick as it has apparently reached the end of it's life cycle so it was time for a repayment. The model APN was 616-0435.
I ordered s replacement via eBay. Same APN.
Battery#1:
Installed: now when plugged in it doesn't show the charge bolt in the status bar... It just shows plug... Basically indicating that it is not charging...
After removing and replacing multiple times with same result I tried the original fast draining battery. And guess what? It charged... So I found the new battery was at fault.
Ordered Battery#2: same APN
installed and same exact behavior. so battery #2 no good either.
Ordered Battery#3: this one was APN 616-0431
this one worked and charged great! I thought all was well until I tried to update to latest firmware. Now i get error 29. WTF. I found this is due to battery APN mismatch to phone. So it works on firmware I have installed but I'm not able to update. Temporary solution.
Now I ordered battery#4: trying again the same APN as my original battery.
Installed and it appears to charge! Yay! But guess what... The phone is plagued by random reboots. WTF.
Now I see others experience this too. Not just me.
So I put back in the battery#3 in the meantime since it's the only one that works. Hopefully i can find a solution.
Hope this helps.iRealSMS - your REAL native landscape SMS app on the iPhone

okay then its gotta be the dock connector if that copper tab is for cell reception. stil waiting on the dock connector to come in the mail.
and its not a battery issue since both of them will cause the same USB overload issue.
