2G dead line on screen

I found left at my work a iPhone 2G. The sim isn't activated and nothing is in the contacts. Looks like a new phone. So after 6 months and no one claiming the phone I've decided to keep it. Long story short, I just noticed that the second row from the top the entire line doesn't work. I open the keypad and 4,5,6 you cannot press. I can't move apps from the 3rd line to the top because the 2nd row is like its frozen. Overall the phone is in excellent shape and very few scratches at all. Nothing on the screen is damage and it looks fairly new. Is there anything at all to test or reset the screen? Anyone ever had this issue? The phone is running 2.2.1 and not jailbroke. Thanks!

Digitizer is bad, will need a whole new screen assembly which runs over $100 for the part alone.
