Default iPhone 3GS Sim Card Not Found/ Error 23 - Plz help!
Hello all! I am new here and found this site through my google searches for help. I am hoping someone here can help me figure this out!

Earlier tonight I was having a convo on my iPhone which lasted for about an hour. When I was done, I noticed that the App Store had some updates to DL and so I went to start those... I noticed that I wasn't connected to my home WiFi, so I went into settings to connect... The network wasn't showing up and this happens from time to time and is resolved by resetting the network settings in the phone. So, I do that and when the phone goes to boot back up, it shows the USB Cable with the CD and it says Emergency Calls only, with No Service!!! I thought maybe my sim card took a poop... So I tried other sim cards and I even tried my iPhone sim in a known-working phone, and it worked no problem. On the phone, on that Emergency Calls only screen, if I hit the little (I) for info, it says Unknown for both the IMEI and ICCID.

So I connected the phone to the PC and tried to do the restore in iTunes. When I plugged the phone in, iTunes said that it cannot activate the phone because the sim card is not inserted!

I tried a regular restore and a DMU restore to no avail. I get this error info:

I am starting to believe now that my iPhone just up and died for no fricken reason. I treat the phone good, never dropped, never wet, always in one of those little rubber cases. I just got it this past summer brand new at Best Buy. I did do the jailbreak on it using PurpleRa1n or blackra1n, I forget which one... But that was like 6mo ago and never had any problems with it ever since. I didn't do any firmware/software or iTunes upgrades since the jailbreak either. The phone worked absolutely fine up until I did the reset on network settings tonight (which I've done many times in the past with no issues).

Any thoughts??? If the phone is actually junk, I'm going to take it to Best Buy or Apple store, so I would like to know if there is a way I could erase everything on the phone before I go. Is there any way to do this now??

Thanks for any help, I really appreciate it. If I missed any valuable info, please just ask and I'll respond ASAP.

I just read up on the "water indicator" and it turns out that mine is red!!! This is effin BS because I NEVER got the phone wet, not once. Never!!

Another update... I watched the videos on YouTube and got brave... Just took the phone apart. The inner water damage indicator is white... The phone jack indicator is white.. No signs of water damage inside the phone. I'm stumped and quite frankly very pissed off. I'm getting the phone back together now and I'm hoping by some miracle it works. I used some of that compressed air in a can (electronics cleaner) to blow everything out ... so, meh.

Hardware problem. I took mine to the AT&T store, we called Apple, they said they'd replace it. Only thing is, Google for the bspatch for Error (23) to get that jailbreak off of it before you return it.

Actually, I did the second part for you...

    Bypass iTunes ERROR (23)

Sorry about your luck, trust me, I wasn't happy to see my replacement show up with 3.1.3 and 05.12.01 preinstalled.

Thank you so much for your help Brendon! Unfotunately now, I can't get it to do the restore in iTunes. It just keeps giving me the sim card error... Last night, I was able to get it to give me the restore option a few times. Any idea's??? Thanks!!!

UPDATE - I followed the instructions in a YouTube video and I got the phone into restore mode and it successfully ran the restore through iTunes. When the phone booted back up though, it was still bricked and iTunes gave the usual no sim card error message. I know the sim card is good, I used it all day long in my backup cell phone and I've tried my other good sim card.

I followed the instructions of Olethros (see Brendon's link) for cpich3g iTune's patch to get the restore to work. I am going to take the phone to the Apple store tomorrow.

I assume that since the iTunes/iPhone restore completed with no issues, that my iPhone is now back to factory condition and my jailbreak should be gone now, right? That is, it should be safe to take the phone into the Apple store now, correct?

I just got back from the Apple store. The "genius" there couldn't get the phone to do anything either... So they replaced the phone for me! Even though the docking port water indicator was pink, they said that at least 2 of the water indicators have to be set off to void warranty. So, I got a new 3GS now!

SWEET!!! Now, did it come with 3.1.2 or 3.1.3 on it? I'm about due to do something bad to my phone! Just wish I didn't have to go through mailing the thing back. AT&T tells me to go through Apple, the closest Apple store is about 300 miles away. If I drive 300 miles, I'm still not POSITIVE I'll get one with 3.1.2 on it. I'm still WELL within warranty, I bought mine one month ago, it got replaced last week, so, yeah, it's within warranty, just takes a LONG time(Seven days) for me to get a new phone. Plus, I don't even know what I'd tell them this time to get it replaced. I'm totally stuck. Good to hear you got a new phone though!

It's 3.1.3. What is the big issue with having that version? I'm just glad to have the phone again lol. I did the jailbreak before and DL'd all of these apps and I rarely even used any of them haha.

That sucks you don't have an Apple store nearby... I have 2 with-in 10 miles and I'm sure there are several to my south going towards Philadelphia.

I like theming my iPhone, the different lockscreens, etc. I'm just outstide of State College, Pa, you'd THINK there would be an Apple store IN State College with PSU being right there! My closest one is Pittsburgh, then one in Lancaster. D@mn you Apple!!!

Dude, I'm in Allentown... That isn't THAT far from State College. I think like 2hr drive? Looking on Google maps, it would seem that the Lancaster area store would be closer to you than Pitts. So what is wrong with 3.1.3??
