02-20-2010, 05:52 PM #12G water damage, repair or junk it?
I just returned from a trip and acquired a water-damaged 2G-8GB for $20. It's in good condition, but will not start, or show any signs of life .
What do you advise? Should I junk it, try to repair it myself, or send it someplace?
Hints, suggestions, advise?

Unfortunately, it appears OOW is now $199 + tax (CA: 8.75%) + $6.95 handling fee == $223.36.
Apple - Support - iPhone - Service FAQ
Note: can't believe how long it took me to find this page .
In my opinion --- a bit much for a 2G. Guess I'll keep it for spare parts

I just returned from the Apple Genius Store in Temecula, California
The charge is $199 + tax for all OOW iphones 2G, 3G, 3GS.
Note 1: They did try to find a way to get an update/upgrade pricing,
but failed on that attempt also.
Note 2: I was surprised, but they will sell a carrier-free
non-contract (complete unlock) 3GS for $699+tax

I don't know what is going on in Cali but none of that seems accurate....Not calling you a liar, just that the store you were in/Genuis may be unaware of policies. Apple is restricted from selling Officially Unlocked iPhones in the USA. They can sell you a phone without a contract for full retail amount of $699, but the phone will still be locked to At&t.
Here in Florida, OOW replacements on the 1st Generation iPhone are $149. I know because A)Former Apple employee, and B)I still have strong ties with Apple

Thanks Melech518. Interesting information.
Maybe I'll try another store for the OOW replacement. They entered my S/N in the computer and wouldn't budge on the price.
About the unlocked 3GS...... maybe the 3 gentlemen(?) were crazy, or don't really know the policies, but I asked a very explicit question about using on ANY GSM carrier worldwide (including T-Mobile in the USA) and was told it is completely unlocked for all carriers including T-Mobile USA but 3G won't work -- like I didn't know that.
Reminds me of all the other big companies. If you ask 100 people the same question, you're likely to get 50 different answers, maybe 100 (haha).
My task: Find the one that gives me the answer I want to hear. Florida here I come

Ur better off buying an iPhone 2g off eBay they in 150-200 range used and u don't have to do all this running around but it's ur decision and your time.

ok my friend has an iphone 2g and its case is scratched to hell.
he wants a whole new phone, if he purposly dips his phone in water will appls do a OOW replacement..
and it has been opened up by me before. so even if they know it has been opened, will they replace it with proof of water damage?
02-25-2010, 10:29 AM #14
I can not specifically respond about the water damage question, but my 2G (the one the Apple Genius store in Temecula, CA looked at) had a fairly significant dent in the center back. It also was obvious that it had been opened. The 'genius' stated the dent may be the problem, or if it had worked when it was 1st dented --- was likely to be the problem now ..or.. cause problems later. Regardless of these visible issues, they still offered the $199 OOW.

So let me understand this-I can take a non AT&T iPhone contract with a scratches and dents pay $199 and get OOW replacement?

Sounds like u miss securing the antennae wire for wifi to work. I would snap it and silicone glue it in place.
