1st Gen iPhone Screen Repair...
Hello, I'm sure there has been many topics on this and I searched the forums but didn't find too much help. I have a 1st Gen iPhone and ONLY the glass is broken. It still registers touches and works perfectly fine. I was wondering if someone could post a tut or something cuz I keep getting different answers on whether you can replace just the glass or if you need to replace the whole assembly.

Would also like to know this but i'm pretty sure that you have to change the hole thing but maybe someone has managed to change just the glass or screen before.

It can be done but you ned to make sure you get a digitizer not just the plain glass. The lcd is very fragile though and from my experience it is much easier to replace the whole assembly. You might spend lots of time removing the old digitizer only to mess it up in the end and have to get the assembly anyway.

Well for my 2g the glass and digitizer are fine, it's the screen thats got a line in it. How hard would the take the screen from the glass and digitizer? Is it worth it?

It is impossible, trust me! You need to replace the Digitizer and the LCD, which are fused together. Trying to separate the 2 will only cause you unneeded grief that will wind up breaking both anyways. 2 options: Purchase the complete assembly for about $89 and replace it yourself, or get an out of warranty replacement from Apple for $149

I have had about a 40% success rate with just replacing the glass. It is an extremely tedious process of separating the glass from the digitizer. I used a very small flat head screwdriver. A little too much pressure here or there and you will crack the digitizer. I have heard of people using a heat gun to loosen the adhesive, but I have never personally done this.
This being said, I would agree with everyone else here and just buy the whole screen assembly. It will most likely save you a couple hours and a headache.
