So the past couple days have been unnerving to say the least.
I woke up a couple days ago, checked my phone, & oh snaps! I noticed a few dead pixels on the very top row.
As the hours passed, these pixels became a small line about the length of my battery logo. A day later, there were a couple more out on the next row directly below them. And so on.
This problem is clearly getting worse and I get the feeling my screen is about to be nothing but dead pixels in a about months time.
So, here's where the clever members of MMi can help me.
I have a jailbroken 8GB 2g iPhone with AT&T thats a little over 2 years old. It had a one year Apple warranty that is now up so I can't just take it in and swap it out. I think.
I'm desperately hoping to find a way to get this fixed at Apples expense if at all possible.
I realize that is highly unlikely. That said, what's going to be my best option for getting this fixed/swapped/repaired for free? Or as cheap as humanly possible if there's no way to get it done free.

Is there not a way to get a new one free?
I thought if your warranty was up you had to pay to replace it.
I'm sure someone on here knows a trick to making this happen..
The goal is to get a new one free. I just need someone to tell me how.

your warranty is up. you will have to pay...there's no way around it...

Not possible. Sorry but you are going to either pony up $100 for a new screen or buy a 3GS

That's exactly what I didn't want to hear.
Isn't there some way to upgrade your phone through AT&T if you've had it more then two years?
Would I have to install the new screen myself? And what's to say that one won't have the same issue?

Like stealth said you should be able to get the upgrade. Also there are members on this forum that do repairs on iPhones if you don't feel condfident in fixing it yourself.

Every 2 years each line on your account is eligible for an equipment upgrade. Check your account online or call 611

It sounds like my only option is to upgrade. Making my grand total for a working iPhone around $800. That's just rediculous. I paid like $550 when it came out and now I'm gonna pay $200-250 to get an upgrade.
It seems like since it's a hardware issue Apple should be paying the bill for this one.
Also, I now have another line of about 15 pixels out on the other side above the carrier
name. What I would like to know thought is how is it possible that some of them on the line above the battery can come and go.
This morning it was wayy longer but then some of them magically dissappeared. If that's possible how is there not a way to make them alll change back?

Apple would have paid for it if it was still in warranty. But it past that point. Everything seems to break just beyond the warranty point it seems though. If my HDTV broke right now I would be pissed cause it is out of warranty but I know there is nothing else I can do other than get a new one. I just look at it as an upgrade. You will be getting better hardware and you will notice the difference. You will have warranty for a year. Apple takes a lot of things in if under it. I had 1 piece of dust under my screen and they took it back without an issue but the phone was new, only 2 months old.
You could always just get the 3G upgrade for 99$.

It seems like there are alot of cases of long lines of pixels going out on 2g iPhones.
I know when I owned a Treo 650 Palm discovered there were major issues and large numbers of phones having the same issues the got slapped with a lawsuit over it and I was eligible for some kind of compensation if I put my name in on this huge lawsuit against Palm.
I never did it, but my point is that if it's a known hardware issue that lots of phones are having it seems like Apple would swap me out or somethingggg just to keep me happy.
I'm probably wrong. I'm sort of just hoping if I talk about it enough someone who knows more then I do on that specific topic could tell me if that's possible before I have to spend any more money.

Worked for Apple, now own The iPhone Hospital, and I still work closely with Apple. That being said, no one is going to give you a free phone or fix yours at no cost. Your phone is out of warranty now and is your responsibility if anything goes wrong with it. They will not try to make you happy, but they will offer you an "out of warranty replacement" for $149. If you have had your phone for over 2 years, and you are eligible for an upgrade through At&t, then you can get a new 3G for $99 or 3GS for $199. I know this has been mentioned to you before on this thread but I am just reminding you of this.

Im just going to have to suck it up and upgrade through AT&T.
I do get to keep my old Iphone if I upgrade don't I?

Of course, the only way you wouldnt be able to keep your phone is if you went the "Out of Warranty replacement" route.
