Broke connector 3 locking mechanism
Hello,
I recently smashed my glass and decided to finally replace it today, Anyway upon putting everything back together I noticed that I had broke that little black clip that holds connector 3 in place so now my earpiece doesnt work
. Anyway I've tried some selulotape to no avail. I'm wondering if anyone else has had this issue and what they did to overcome it thanks in advance.
George
Also could I take it back into a Apple store and play retarded saying the earpiece doesn't work

If you are very careful at sliding connector #3 in place, and then even more careful connecting #2 and #1 making sure you don't pull #3 back out you should be able to close the lid up without it pulling out and it will work - I broke the little switch before on a 3g and never had a problem with the earpiece when I just slid the connector into place.
I don't rate your chances at the apple store, they will spot pretty quickly that it has been tampered with and thus the warranty is invalidated.

Dont try to screw over the Apple store for your mistake.
And if you didnt open the tab on the connector before you initially pulled it out....then you most likely damaged the flex cable (#3) and will now have to replace it, which is why its not working. It will still work without that tab.

Damm tried that still no work
I literally want to cry haha. Think I might just have to suck it up and buy another iPhone and vow to never open it again, Would someone buy the iPhone I have now?

Well don't feel too bad. The connector costs about 9 bucks on Ebay brand new....the soldiering skills required to perform the surgery....priceless!
I'm sure someone here on the forum can help u. If the cable is damaged too, just go ahead and fork over the additional 9 for a new one too and start fresh.

Hey guys, what you need to do is solder a new connector to the m/b with a fine tipped iron. and you definitely need a microscope to do so. I do this repair if anyone is interested.

I'm one of the unlucky ones...
Krazy,
I'm one of the unlucky ones that has had this happen to them as well. Although it happened after several assembly/disassembly cycles, so it was probably more mechanical stress (and my stress as well) than simply ham-fistedness. I'd almost given it up as a lost cause because I didn't want to replace the board...I've replaced almost everything else except the battery, vibration motor, and the camera (darn thing was a basket case). PM me with a charge to do this if you would, and let me know if you need me to obtain the connector as well. Thanks!

I don't really like to talk about pricing through the forums, but I can address your questions. Please keep all pricing talk private so it doesnt seem like spam in the original threads. Thanks!
Anyway, if you can provide the connector #2 I can more likely do it. However, those "black hardware specs" are an entire different animal. They are TINY. It is possible I can solder it, BUT... a huge BUT... the heat is more than likely going to damage it somehow.
My capabilities are pretty much limited to connectors like the #3 and #1,2,4,5,6, and even 7 on 3Gs'
The tip of my iron is .010" so thats as small as it gets. I can also do ipod dock connections, those ALWAYS break.
EDIT: BTW those black specs unobtanium, the board may be junk if you have one gone. I have no clue how to get one or where to get one, or even HOW to figure out what it is. Maybe EEs can chime in?Last edited by krazy; 03-11-2010 at 10:26 AM. Reason: more info
