Connect to car stereo

I've searched through the topics for car stereo's but I'm still not sure what the hell I'm doing wrong.

I have a kenwood aftermarket stereo in my mustang, it has a AUX jack on the front cover. I have a cheap radio shack audio cable and an audio cable that came with my computer monitor.

When I plug either one into my iphone & that jack my stereo still doesn't pick up the fact it's plugged in.

My question is what cable do I need in order to play my music through my car stereo?

Just a plain stereo 1/8" male x male audio cable.

If that is what I've been using any idea what would be the reason why it's not working?
