Default USB to iTunes Problem 1st Gen.

when i plug in the phone, the computer doesn't read it.

is there a way to back it up, because if i restore it, everything will be deleted.

There is no way to back it up because iTunes will not identify it, or rather, it will identify it as an iPhone requiring a restore and will not allow access to it. What you might be able to do is to try something like iPhoneBrowser to download all the files you originally had in it. I'm not sure if this affects the contacts or whatever but it's probably the most you can do. Hope this helps.

If you have synced your phone in iTunes before this happened most will return when you sync again.
You'll have to put the phone in DFU mode and restore it.

Is there a way also to activate the iPhone from At&T without actually activating, maybe a way around this ?
    because im living in australia.

Jailbreak it. It will remove the ATT activation screen, and I'm guessing you would have to unlock it as well, you can do both of these things with redsn0w on a 2G or iPod Touch. On an iPhone 3G, you would jailbreak it and then download ultrasn0w from cydia.
