i dont think there is a modification you can do to them to make it work. the chip inside the cable is programmed to be compatible with 2.1 and nothing else. really the only way is to buy a new one that is compatible with 3.1

Helps to read the fine print on ebay . I got taken on this . Item works as a charger with the usb connection but the A/V function doesnt . I did get audio out of my big screen , but not the other tv.

Anyone know if there are some cheap cables that work with the latest firmware ?

hey, I purchased the cables during 2.2 and those cables did not work. I also got them from ebay. They work on my bro 120 GB ipod classic just fine but not on the my iphone 2G with 3.1.2.. I believe they only work on 2.1!
