Default Strange Home Button issue, I can't find answer.
OK sorry if this has been posted. I searched here and google.
Another Home Button issue, but I have not found any answer on this.

I have a 8GB 2G. The home button will not wake up the phone, but the power/sleep button will. I know it sounds familiar.

    Please hear me out.

The home button works fine once the phone is powered on with sleep/power button.
It will also wake up the when the power cord is plugged in.
    It will close apps.
It will pull up ipod on home screen.
This is all with the power cord plugged in or after i press the power/sleep button.

It just will not wake up the phone when on battery power, I always have to press the power/sleep button.

I have tried restoring it with and without jailbreaking. Same issue.

I have upgraded and downgraded firmware. Same issue.

This is second hand phone and of course out of warranty.

I'm stuck and can't find an answer anywhere.

I would only have to assume an issue with the flex cable. I would deal with it as that is a very hard cable to replace.

I was afraid that it was something Hard to fix.
    Might try to fix it.

Would it still work in all other examples except on battery though.
Seems strange that works with power cord in or after power/sleep, but not on battery.

You'd be surprised what hardware faults can cause something to do.

The flex cable on a 2g runs from the charging port to the home button and speakers, mic, etc. etc. So all can be affected. But could also be a reason for it to work while charging.

    But you've tried numorous restores.

I would also suggest re-downloading the firmware file and restore with the new download, prolly wont work....but its worth knocking out a possible bad firmware file.

And if it still does not work there is a Cydia App that will change your home button if it gets worse. Apparently all too common problem but there are eventual work arounds.

Care to elaborate more on the app?

Weird issue here... I've been having problems with my 8GB 2G home button as well. It sometimes doesn't work and I have to press it hard/multiple times. Not trying to thread-jack but if anyone knows a fix for this please let me know.

Anyway, like cpjr said, that is a hard cable to replace because you actually have to take the home button out the top, which can cause other things to break. Although it has been done with patience and a heat gun.

An idea would be to buy some used 2G parts. Should be cheap now, but you'd probably have to replace the whole screen/LCD/Digi, and good luck finding a good working used one :/

You can buy the flex cable on ebay pretty cheap.

Ebay is a good place to find parts for the phones now days and with iFixit: Apple Mac, MacBook, iPod, and iPhone Repair Parts you can see just how bad it is to do or how good you have to feel to do it yourself.

    Koinonia:
The program was called iHome now it's mQuickDo and I think it became a shareware kind of thing. An alternative I recently found if you use SBSettings (If you don't its a good program) called Close Button. I think all it does is close whatever program you are in to take you back to the home screen. It doesn't do anything fancy but I guess exiting a program may seem like a luxury if you don't have it.

    Alright thanks.

Also I fixed my odd issue of having to push hard/multiple times it seems. I was informed by someone to push down on the home button pretty hard, then "slide" it towards you. Now obviously do this at your own risk, and dont push so hard anything breaks. But for me it seems to be working fine now...

Also, I it stops working completely, try mquickdo, a home button replacement app. It works pretty well!

The for now is what I am worried about. If you have to push something that hard it may become a problem. Have you tried checking if you still have a warranty? If you don't have ATnT it will be difficult but not impossible to get it replaced if you still have it. But you can check it here...
