I would have thoroughly checked the phone out before buying it, especially off craigslist....especially for the price you paid.

We all feel your pain and sense of distress. You asked for help and advise. It has been given. Now you need to figure out the next step. Good luck.

^I dont blame you for being worried, anybody would be.
But you gotta get it fixed....find a post one1 has made (which you can search for in his profile) and click his sig link, he has a thead dedicated to helping people with their phones....
You will see, with his length of membership here, # of posts and # of people he's helped....you have nothing to worry about. I know him personally.
We wouldnt tell you otherwise (I ESPECIALLY wouldnt being a mod).

Apple would probably just laugh at you.
Unless you know of someone else you don't really have a lot of choices.
I would be very wary of sending my phone to just anyone but One1 is a respected member of this community - if anyone else had had a problem with him I'm sure we would have heard! He who asks a question looks foolish for 5 minutes. He who doesn't ask a question remains foolish forever.

So I went to the apple store today and told him my story and he didnt laugh at me. In fact he gave me a brand new Iphone cause he felt bad that I pretty much got screwed by a guy on craigslist. I think the phone was still under warranty but he pulled a few strings and gave me a brand new one no questions asked. It was shocking but man was I happy. It is a 3G 16 GB with a white back, not a black back. The only problem is I am worried about unlocking it. Which guide should I follow to unlock it? Thanks!

What is the baseband & bootloader?

-

Thats the problem... Im not sure how to look at the baseband if the phone is locked. I know to usually get it you go under settings or somewhere like that but all I can do is make emergency calls on it. How is it possible to figure out that baseband with having it locked?

good to know you got a new one, but chances are it's 2.2.1 with the newest baseband which is not unlockable by software. use quickpwn to activate it n jailbreak then we what your working with. worst case you will need a sim adapter but u got a working home button! lol

Great I tried to unlock it and now all I am getting is an apple screen and its froze like that. I have tried turning it off and on 5 times and i get the same thing everytime. I really dont think anymore could go wrong right now.

yup, sounds like you'll have to put in DFU mode, restore and jailbreak again.

How do I put it into DFU mode? I turn on Itunes and it says ITunes could not connect to the Iphone because an unknown error occurred.

INSTRUCTIONS
Step 1. Turn off iPhone
Step 2. Hold down the power and home button.
Step 3. When you see the Apple logo, release the power button but continue holding the home button down.
Step 4. Open iTunes and wait for it to tell you that it’s in restore mode.
Alternative Method:
Step 1. Connect iPhone to USB then listen to the sound when it connect and disconnect.
Step 2. Hold the home and power buttons until hear the disconnect sound then release power button.
Step 3. Wait until you hear another sound then release home button.

If you got a new phone chances are really good you will have to use a turbo type sim for unlock.Last edited by blkcadi; 05-22-2009 at 08:22 PM.

I've only just woken up and seen this.
Well, if it didn't have BB 2.30.03 on before it certainly will now!
If it was a brand new phone it would have done anyway but if it was a refurb (are the first 2 chars of the serial number 5K?) then there is a possibility it just might have BL 5.8 and the BB might be downgradable. He who asks a question looks foolish for 5 minutes. He who doesn't ask a question remains foolish forever.
