I want to change the casing on my iphone 3G. some questions (need cpjr!!)
so I have an 8GB iPhone 3G. I got it 2 weeks after they came out (July 31st). My black shell is cracked and scratched all over (i don't know why, I have a case and I treat it well).
So I saw some threads made by cpjr showing taking it all apart and switching the shell (painting it orange and red).
I want to buy a colored shell (red, blue, or white) off of ebay.
I'd like to hear from anyone who's done this before. Is it a challenge?
I changed the faceplate off my PSP and took apart my PS3 controller and put it all back together again so I'm a bit experienced with this.
and do you guys have any other recommendations like color, where to order it from, etc...
thanks everyone!I am not a jailbreak n00b

If you have experience with small electronics and some common sense....you can do it. Like anything else dont get into a hurry and dont guess...or something will break. Easy?.....dunno, I dont think its to bad, but ive done alot of em.
And ebay is the cheapest to get the housings. They all come from Hong Kong no matter what and are all the same...but ebay is the cheapest.

Yeah, it will. They're all the same, I believe.

i changed my 16gb black shell for a blue one (with 8gb printed on the back
)
the hardest part of the swap i think it removing the bezel from the black case - you must use the proper bezel, the ne they supply doesnt have all the fixings.
getting the silent toggle/volume switches/sleep power button to extrude as they did on the black case may take a little extra padding or something, the fit of the colured housings is not perfect.
take your time, be patient and you will be fine. The Original Autobot of MMiJesus couldn't turn into a fire engine

taking them off = easy, just a few screws.
getting them back on PROPERLY , that is the only truly hard part in the whole process - silent toggle especially. Mine still dont sit properly.
I think it is just because the new housing is ever so slightly larger/thicker than the oem one - what can you expect for £15 though.
LOOK: MobileMe Gallery
trying to show the difference between the buttons and the fact that the bezel doesnt naturally sit flush and that the 2 screws at the bottom dont screw in all the way (1 does 1 doesnt)
i know the answer to all these to finish it off properly but just havent had time yet.The Original Autobot of MMiJesus couldn't turn into a fire engine

Thats a really good job you did. Gives me hope that I can do that, but I have been scared since my 2g back housing change. Really nice job though.
