Default Iphone won't restore. (jailbroken)- please help :)
I had a jailbroken iphone v 5.x.x and I was having issues with it so I wanted to completely upgrade my phone to the newest software version (6.1.1 I believe?). When I plugged it in and selected to upgrade my phone in itunes I got an error after it finished. (Error 9 and -1). Now my phone wont turn on at all and is stuck at the screen telling me to plug into itunes.

I have tried it in DFU mode and still nothing..

Does anyone know how to fix this.

    Thanks

Follow this link, it will tell what the error means and how to resolve in most cases.

No need for all that. This is a simple fix.

All righty I'll post the fix here.

    On a mac,

Open up a finder window and click on "GO/Go to folder" on the menu bar. Type in

    /private/etc

    Look for the hosts files.

Open them up in any coding software such as coda, sublime, notepad+, or whichever you have.

You will see lines in the code called:
    #74.208.10.249 gs.apple.com
    #127.0.0.1 gs.apple.com

Delete these and save the document.

You may be required to input a security password for changing a system file.

If you aren't able to edit it and save it. Drag the files that contain the gs.apple.com to the desktop and open it from your desktop to edit and save. Then drag back to where they were.

If you have any troubles, please feel free to let me know.

These steps should be similar to windows. I don't have windows so I'm not entirely sure.

Once you completed these steps, launch itunes and restore

Hmm..that's odd. Any error I've ever had, this has been the fix for me and several others that I've helped with this problem.

That's the only fix that I know.
I wish I could be more help to you.

I had the same problem, iPhone 4S won't restore. It started when the phone was j/b way back on iOS 5.1.1 the phone would lock up at times and I have to "hard reboot" hold the power button and home button down until the apple logo appears and let go both power and home buttons. Sometime it works some times takes 2 to 4 times before the lock screen shows up..... I thing it has to do with Cydia, this all started when HACKCULO shut down and Cydia attemp to reload files " can't download xxxxxxxx files old files are being use" something like that. I try to re install the HACKCULO program thinking it was corrupted many more time until I learn it was shut down, so I deleted the HACKCULO program within Cydia. With the new release evasion, I restore and updated to 6.1 and this work for a few weeks and bam won't restore. Lucky I purchas the warranty so I got a new or refurbish phone.... My question is this I have find my phone setup and set it to lock and wipe phone, apple store has this phone now will it still lock and wipe the phone should they figure how to restart the phone with out restore the phone????

If you trying to edit the hosts file in Windows 7, run Notepad as admin and open up to Cwindows\system32\Drivers\etc\hosts.. you have to select all files to be able to see it ( *.* )

    Default Apple Terminal
You can use the apple terminal.

    1) sudo nano /private/etc/hosts
    2) use admin password if you don't have one you can set it in system preferences >> users
    3) edit file
    4) control + o to save
    5) hit enter
    6) control + x to exit
