01-26-2013, 02:11 PM #1accidentally erased all contents and setting on jailbroken iphone!!
I was just recently given my friend's old iphone which was unlocked and jailbroken, and I foolishly erased all of the settings and contents on the phone! I had to do a restore via itunes but on the phone, it brings me to like an activation screen where I have to put in my language and country, etc. The problem is, it also asks for a SIM card. I have a SIM card, but its from t-mobile and the phone won't read that! Is there any way to jailbreak/unlock the phone again or am I totally screwed?!

What phone, firmware version, baseband???
You need to give us a little more info if you want us to help you bud.

Haha sorry! I'm so scatterbrained right now because of this :P
The phone is an iphone 3GS, I'm downloading the iOS 6.0.1 firmware right now cause I just recently updated itunes, and I don't know about the baseband :/
I can't go into the phone and check cause I guess it needs to be activated first with a SIM card or something? (Which I lack a proper one right now cause it won't read my t-mobile card )

I'm not that good with my 3GS knowledge. But Simon is the master of these issues. Let's through up the Simon signal and see if he comes to the rescue.

Model: iPhone 2, 1 [MB716LL/A]
Do you want the serial number, IMEI, ECID, and SHSH Blobs on Cydia as well?
01-26-2013, 03:31 PM #8
Do you know who the phone is originally locked to? ATT?
What are the first 5 numbers of your serial number?
Also from that same site download idetector, this will tell us if you have old or new bootrom which will be important for jailbreaking.
If you know what SHSH you have that will be helpful too.
01-26-2013, 03:41 PM #9
Yup, the phone was originally AT&T.
First five digits are: 87931
The program has a drop-down box of 6 options of SHSH I would assume?
And it says I have old bootrom.

Ok, you have a few options then.
Since you have old bootrom you can jailbreak untethered on 6.0.1 with redsnow 0.9.15b3 (you will need a copy of 6.0 firmware for a 3GS to point redsnow to since it doesn't technically recognize 6.0.1).
As for your unlock I would suggest getting it officially unlocked. You can either do this by calling ATT and giving them your IMEI and they "should" unlock it for free for you.
Alternatively you can use an IMEI unlocking site like Unlocks | IDeviceGuys Only cost $15 and the end result is the same, officially unlocked.
You could go the ultrasnow unlock route but that is a lot more complicated, it would require you using redsnow to update your baseband to the ipad baseband, then downgrading the baseband to 5.13.04 which is required for unlocking with ultrasnow (you could technically leave it at the ipad baseband but that breaks gps). Then you would have to install ultrasnow and ultrasnow fixer from cydia to unlock. This way is a bit less reliable and the unlock is not permanent like an official unlock, a restore or update would lock it again.
You can also put your IMEI in here: iPhone IMEI Checker with SIMLock Status & Fast AT&T USA Iphone Unlock Service !
Just to make sure your phone isn't already officially unlocked.

Can a google search give me all of the downloads required for this?
Also, once this is all done, I can put in my t-mobile SIM card and I would be able to talk and text with it?

Thanks Simon. This lock / unlock thing is way out of my area of expertise. Not that I have any to begin with.
Bro, as you can already tell, you are in good hands here. Good luck!
See ya round Simon.

Yes, google search will work.
But some of the download links you find on google may be from unreliable or dodgy sites.
These ones should be legit:
Dev Team blog:
Tiny Umbrella: (you probably don't need)
The Firmware Umbrella - TinyUmbrella
Ultrasn0w and Cydia can be installed on the phone directly, after or during the jailbreak.
There aren't really any other tools you need to download, or which would really help.

It is 8:39 and my phone has officially been jailbroken/usable for t-mobile!!
Haha thank you so much Simon and King_O_Hill for helping me with this! I cannot express how appreciative I am!!

Old bootroom can get untethered 6.0.1 but new bootrom doesnt yet?
