Exclamation I think I bricked my 4S...please help
I'm sorry if I'm posting this in the wrong place.

Friday, I bought a used Verizon iPhone 4s on 5.1.1, already jailbroken, and unlocked with a Gevey Ultra S Sim tray. I have a T-Mobile SIM. I had no problems out of it except for MMS not working, and some googling brought me to this guide (http://insanelyi.com/topic/10755-how-to-fully-unlock-cdma-iphone-4s-511-and-fix-mms-data-imessage-facetime-and-carrier-settings/). I skipped to part 3 since 1 and 2 were already done. That part had me hex editing the CommCenter file, and either I or the guide messed up and my phone got stuck in a boot loop. Since SHSH blobs for this phone were saved on Cydia previously, I thought restoring it would be annoying but not a big deal. I was wrong.

    I have tried:
    • downloading 5.1.1 firmware and just shift+restoring it (error 3194)
    • opening tinyumbrella and starting its TSS server, then opening itunes and retrying the above (error 160x)
    • reinstalling iTunes and Apple Application support/Apple Mobile Device Support (still get error 160x)
    • using three different USB cables in all my non-3.0 ports, including one brand-new one I had lying around, and even moving to another computer
    • trying to upgrade to iOS 6 just so I can get some use out of the phone and maybe re-sell it, by just clicking restore then restore & upgrade and downloading the firmware myself (error 3194 again)
    • attempting to SSH into the filesystem while it's in DFU mode and replace the one file I changed (apparently that's not possible with this phone because of the A5 chip)

I have no idea what else to do. Is the phone just ruined?

If you have not updated to IOS6.0, run redsn0w 0.9.15b1, use the restore button , select your 5.1.1 ipsw , use local or remote blob and restore all within redsn0w. Give it a try.

that didn't work. redsnow says "Re-restore failed. You might have guessed the current FW incorrectly, and it may not really be iPhone4,1_5.1.1_9B206."

Then IOS 6.0 is your only Option.

I still get error 3194. I have no idea why. I've removed all gs.apple.com references from my hosts file and restarted

How are you restoring ? from Recovery or dfu mode. Restore from a different computer if you have one.

You'll need to use a different computer. This sounds like a computer problem more than an iPhone issue.
Here to help if I can. If I can't I know someone who can!

Error 3194 means itunes cannot verify your blob. Reinstall itunes and make sure hosts file make no reference to cydia server. Delete Tiny Umbrella if possible cos TU has the tendency to set your hosts file towards cydia server. Restore from recovery mode.

iYeow beat me to it. 3194 is an iTunes blob verification error. Follow iYeow's instructions.

I called a friend and borrowed his computer, re-downloaded the update through iTunes (4 hours, no excuse for this Apple), and it completed! The phone is completely useless to me now, but I can sell it and hopefully get an unlocked 4 instead of 4s. Thank you two so much for the help!

If it "completed" why is the phone now useless to you?

I don't have Verizon and don't want to switch, and the Gevey Sim unlock won't work anymore
