I want to use a couple of apps that require ios 4.2 but I only have 4.1 (8B117).
My 3gs came jailbroken. is there a way I can move to 4.2 from 4.1? If so would I have to back everything up first so as not to lose it?
Thank you for any help

You need to see what blobs you have for the phone. Open up Cydia and see if it has any number on the top of it.

Thank you for your prompt reply.

Yes that's them. That's the firmware which you can update to.

Thank you again,
So I can't upgrade to 4.2 but would have to upgrade to 5.1 and then unlock and jailbreak again?
Hmmm. not sure if I'm ready to do that.

Use the most current version of redsn0w (available here, I think the most current version is 0.9.11b4) to make a custom IPSW (Extras -> Custom IPSW, point to a downloaded 5.1.1 IPSW file) to preserve your baseband for unlocking.

what is the bootrom? is that the same as the baseband? 6.15.00
How would I know what bootrom I have?
