What a fantastic site! I'm sure this will already have been covered but I can't find the answer by searching.
I have a jailbroken Iphone 3GS on 5.0.1 but i am soon to to upgrade to a brand new phone (probably iphone 4 - not 4S due to lack of jailbreak...unless you can help!)
anyway, my question is this, when i get the new phone will it force me to install 5.1, or can i start off on 5.0.1? I assume if i install 5.1 it will be a pain (or impossible) to downgrade?
Thanks for any help in advance.

your question is a HIT AND MISS one, because since 5.1 is fairly new, some phones that were already packaged and shipped to stores contain 5.0.1 before 5.1 was released, while others that were just manufactured comes with 5.1..
so you will be lucky if you got an iphone 4 with 5.0.1, if I were u I would check it directly at the store whether it came with 5.0.1 or 5.1 and if it came with 5.1, ask for one with 5.0.1 if possible

i think you can calculate the ios version of a NIB iphone by its serial number. the serial number is printed on the back of the iphone box. ios5.1 started march 7, 2012. so that would put it in week of production 10. so let's assume that all new iphone 4s starting WOP 10 has ios5.1 installed from apple. so perhaps anything before WOP 9 shall have 5.01. you can decode the serial number as follows:
Serial numbers come in the form AABCCDDDEEF which can be read as follows:
AA = Factory and machine ID
B = Year manufactured (simplified to final digit, 2010 is 0, 2011 is 1, etc)
CC = Week of production
DDD = Unique identifier
EEF = iPhone model, color of device and size of storage
VR0 (iPhone 2G Silver 4GB) WH8 (iPhone 2G Silver 8GB) 0KH (iPhone 2G Silver 16GB) Y7H (iPhone 3G Black 8GB) Y7K (iPhone 3G Black 16GB) 3NP (iPhone 3GS Black 16GB) 3NR (iPhone 3GS Black 32GB) 3NQ (iPhone 3Gs White 16GB) 3NS (iPhone 3Gs White 32GB) A4S (iPhone 4 Black 16GB) A4T (iPhone 4 Black 32GB)

For example, the serial 86209XXXA4S was manufactured in 2012 in the 9th week. So this would be an iphone that most likely have ios5.01.

Ahh so the software is pre-loaded, i might get lucky with an Iphone 4 then.
I don't think it is worth the risk of getting a 4S
