New on the Iphone world. Just got mine and need help.
I bought from ebay a used iphone which just arrived and sadly its giving me problems. The person that was selling it stated it was jailbroken, which probably is, and unlocked. Sadly though after searching a bit for my network it says that no network is found.
I want to ask sorry beforehand for any question that is easy to realize and figure out, repeated many times and could be found with a little searching. I am trying to play it safe by being very careful so I will not in any way "kill" the iphone. Also I am sorry if my English are not good, I am sorry but its not my first language.
First I want to ask if its normal that the SIM card was different from the ones I have. The sim card that was i nthe phone has a small chip on it while the cards that I have have a bigger chip on it. I do not think that is a problem, or more like I hope its not. The phone comes from US and I am gonna use it in Greece. I am not sure if that matters and again I hope it does not. Btw I tried to load 2 different card, a 2G ones and a 3G one and none worked.
The Iphone is a 3GS 8GB
Version 5.0.1(9A405)
Model MC640LL
Modem Firmware 05.16.05
I am not sure if more information are needed on the phone info.
It has Cydia installed on it, which I opened and saw that he has ultasnow 1.2.5 installed along with some other tools that look part of cydia itself.
What I want at least for now is to make it see my network. I found a video that was showing how I could do it but again I wanted to be very careful. Before doing anything actually I want to ask if there is a way to totally backup the iphone in case I do something wrong or just something goes wrong.
Lastly I want to mention that as soon as I connected the iphone on the net with wifi I got a pop up that told me that new carrier information found and if i wanted to update them. I did accept but nothing changed.
Thank you very much for any help provided and I am really sorry if I am asking questions that could be easily answered with a search.

I have Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit.

Seems that with the Modem Firmware 05.16.05 it is only unlocked in US. The only way to be unlocked outside US is to have 05.11.07 or 05.12.01 or 05.13.04 or 06.15.00. Since I had 05.16.05 all I could do was to either go back to iOS4 which I did not consider as a solution,or go to the ipad modem firmware 06.15.00 which of course disables the GPS. As soon as my modem driver was updated it worked like a charm.
