I want to jailbreak my iphone 4 ios 5. However, I am looking for a smooth jailbreak, similar to the jailbreakme one on ios 4.
I have found redsnow, snowbreeze, pwnage tool and greenpoison.
Which one is the best way to jailbreak?

Greenpois0n is for 4.2.1 and 4.1
Pwnage tool is for making custom firmware on mac
Sn0wbreeze is for windows and functionally similar to pwnage tool.
Redsn0w is all round tool.
Jailbreaks are not different . Tool varies with ios version and function .
There is no best option coz they are not really options .
Use redsn0w . U will need to be on iOS 5.0.1 .

Can you just explain what a custom firmware is used for?
Also is using redsnow on iOS 5 as good as jailbreak me
on iOS 4?

Both are made and compiled by same team members. All iPhone jailbreaks are unique . Comparing them is not fruitful but they all are equally amazing. Any iPhone jailbreak released for public is released after being tested by few ppl whose contribution has been in most of the jailbreaks released till date..
Redsn0w is an all around tool and has been used for many many jailbreaks till date.

Or update to 5.0.1 to do a untethered jailbreak with latest redsn0w

No actually I am on 5.0.1, and I followed the instructions of performing an untethered jailbreak but i still got stuck on the apple logo. So I had to restore my iphone. Why did that happen?
