Jailbreaking Gevey-unlocked iPhone on 5.0.1
Hi.
I'm currently running an iPhone on 5.0 that uses a Gevey sim.
So I'm planning to upgrade to 5.0.1 and JB it.
A quick question:
Can I update to a custom ipsw created in redsnow to preserve my BB, and after restoring just jailbreak untethered with redsnow? Willl the unlock still work?
Thanks!
Help would be much appreciated

Yes. Build a custom ipsw in redsn0w or sn0wbreeze and restore to 5.01 in iTunes. Do it ASAP because 5.1 will be out soon.

I used sn0breeze to preserved BB and redsn0w to jailbreak. Unlock worked perfect on 5.0.1. baseband 04.10.01 using Ultra Gevey.
BTW Applenberry just update FuriousMod to work on 5.0.1 so now it will also be untether unlock. No need to dial 112 after reboot.

For all devices except A5 chips, if you have 5.0.1 blob saved, Ifaith can create a signed custom ipsw from the blob saved by tiny umbrella.

I have similar situation and needs some clarifications.
I am using gevey sim on a virgin iphone 4, 4.3.3 [4.10.1]. Can I upgrade using redsnow to create custom firmware 5.0.1 to preserve baseband without jb first?
Also, my iphone 4 currently has no issue with battery drainage. When I upgrade to 5.0.1, will I have the possibility of my phone falling in the same pit as other users in regards to battery life?

Use redsn0w or sn0wbreeze (windows) to preserve your BB for iTunes restore then jailbreak. Do you have AT&T sim card to activate with iTunes? I don't have battery drain problem after activated with original AT&T sim, restored as new and back up with iCloud.

I am actually on softbank (japan) carrier currently staying in usa on vacation. I do have an att sim to active though.
So, you are saying I can upgrade with a custom firmware on a phone that is not jb?

Battery issue is only on iphone 4s, iphone 4 is not affected.

I am in the process of upgrading to 5.0.1 using redsnow beta4 to preserve my baseband. The process seems to be working as I can see the white status bar on the iphone. I ran into some issue when I hit 'shift+restore'. I kept getting a 3194 error code. I am not sure what cause it as I edit the host file to let it run through apple server. It didn't work, however.
I noticed during itunes startup, it as to enter my itunes account. I didn't enter my account info. However, after I enter, I was able to upgrade to 5.0.1 without the 3194.
