Thread: Upgrading problems

Hi
I'm using an iPhone 4 on 4.3.5 with tethered jb.
I've been trying in the last week or so to update via iTunes (up to date) to 5.0.1 (have downloaded it via iTunes).
Everytime iTunes reboots the iPhone, an error message occurs (error code 21).
Apple helpline insists its my PC and/or my security settings. I've even uninstalled all firewalls and AV and still the same error code occurs.
The only way I can get out of the restore cycle is to use Redsn0w 9.10b4, even the previous Redsn0w which I used to jb 4.3.5 with and boot tethered with won't work, just 9.10b4.
Is there any way I can update to 5.0.1? Or un-jb it?
Oh, forgot to mention, I can't even restore it to vanilla 4.3.5
Or how to restore without it auto update step?Last edited by proplus888; 01-16-2012 at 11:03 AM.

You can download the firmware from here. Firmware - Downloads - Apple, iPhone and iPad Forums | ModMyi.com
5.0.1 depending on which one you have.
Then use Shift/option + Restore to choose that IPSW on iTunes.

No good, I already have the correct IPSW download.
I've just tried restore pointing it to the 4.3.5 IPSW and came up with error code 1, but it did go through the restore process (progress bar on iPhone)

Then your set to go.

I should say that after trying to restore it to 4.3.5 (pointing it to the correct IPSW), it goes through the entire process, then iTunes says it needs to restored with error code 1

Just concentrate on 5.0.1 restore, describe how you restore to 5.0.1.

The normal process as far as I can gather
-plug phone in
-start itunes
-itunes detect it can update to 5.0.1 and have downloaded it
-it verifys something
-phone reboots
-its still trying to verify
-up pops up error code 21 putting phone into restore mode, but disappears from itunes
The only way to get itunes to detect the phone again is to press the power and home button for about 10secs to reset it.
Now after attempting to restore to 4.3.5 (failed, error code 1), redsn0w doesn't work, just get the phone to the plug screenLast edited by proplus888; 01-16-2012 at 11:42 AM.

Alright , you must restore your iphone in recovery mode.
Make sure your hosts file is not pointed towards cydia server by deselecting > set hosts file to cydia and then close TU ( don't use it )
You already have the latest itunes.
Run itunes : shift Key + restore ( itunes ) to stock 5.0.1, you may need to do it twice.
Let me know what error this time.

AAARRRGGGGHHH!!! It seems its in some kind of loop!!!
I can't even get it into any mode, I've tried pressing both the power+home button to reset it, itunes doesn't detect it, and the iphone restarts to the Apple logo and then a progress bar appears on the iphone, fills up a bit and stops....

Trigger into recovery mode : Hold both button until the screen just turn off and then immediately plug in your iphone with Power button released but keep holding home button until itunes cable logo appears.

Thanks, that got it out of the loop.
Now waiting for the 5.0.1 download to finish to give that a try.
If this doesn't work, then theres no phone to use. Can't get it to boot, can't restore, can't upgrade to 5.0.1, can't JB........
Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!!
Have gotten it on 5.0.1 and booted!!!
Now to sync over everything and JB!!!!!Last edited by proplus888; 01-16-2012 at 12:53 PM.
