Jailbroken iPod touch running 4.2.1 won't restore in iTunes. Want to upgrade to iOS 5
Hello,
First let me say hi; it's my first post on modmyi.com.
I have an iPod touch 4th gen model with iOS 4.2.1 installed. I used blackra1n to jailbreak it several months ago.
I'd like to upgrade to iOS 5 (jailbroken preferably) and so I attempted to Restore the iPod in iTunes. This did not work, I would get either Error 21 or Error 1. Typically the restore would fail on the "Verifying with Apple" stage at the end.
As per directions I found on the internet, I downloaded some restore files (ipod software restore) & "option-clicked" the restore button to select a specific restore. Didn't work.
Also tried DFU mode, didn't work.
Also it's my birthday today, so please be gentle, I tried searching Google for this issue and found nothing useful..
Thanks!

Do you have Tinyumbrella? If so, open it and deselect the option that says set hosts to cydia. Or something along the lines. And try restoring.

Yep I have tinyumbrella and ticked off the "request SHSH from Cydia" button. Tried this twice and I continue to get this message when restoring in iTunes fails.

Thanks for the help, still looking for the solution.

bigelow, that is not the button you need to UNcheck. The option in tinyumbrella to uncheck is "Set Hosts to Cydia on Exit"
Hope this helps

oh!
That is very helpful!
Ok, let me make sure i have this right:
I open TinyUmbrella. I select my device under "recovery devices."
I switch to the Advance pane.
Set Hosts to Cydia OFF
Request SHSH ON
Then I press "save shsh"? Or do I hit "start TSS Server"? And do I need to then hit "exit recovery"?
The first time I tried this above fix, I got this error when restoring:

Thanks.

I've had this happen to me before with the "Verifying with Apple" part.... Did you try it again? It happened almost 5 times to me and on the fifth try it finally restored and updated to 5.0.1 (I jailbroke it) I'm pretty sure this has to do with server errors or over crowding. Just keep trying it. If not just do what a few of the people said up there ^^^^ Those should work also.

Don't use tiny umbrella for your 5.0.1 restore.

Yep, I've tried at least 10 times.
iYeow, I attempted a restore w/o TinyUmbrella before trying with, to no avail.
